While the two words may sound alike, and even come from the same Latin root word, they really are two very different words.
Elude means to avoid capture, such as:
- The criminal ran to elude the police.
*A good way to remember this is that both elude and escape start with the same letter.
Allude means to indirectly refer to something. For example:
- The patient alluded to some health problems, but he wasn't specific.
