"The Fay's Apprentice" by Amy C. Blake ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Amy is here to share a bit about her latest release. She has offered to give away an electronic copy of winner's choice of a book in the series. You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends June 13, 2019. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you.)

I’m celebrating my newest release, The Fay’s Apprentice, the third novel in my four-book Levi Prince YA Christian fantasy series. This series features scrawny, redheaded, homeschooled pastor’s son Levi Prince during his summers at Camp Classic, a camp for classically educated kids that’s actually a haven for mythical creatures.

Years ago, when I first dreamed up Levi and Terracaelum, it was only natural that Levi be a redheaded, homeschooled pastor's kid like my own children. Camp Classic came into being because we follow a Classical Christian educational system for homeschool, and I thought it be intriguing to include stories from Classical mythology into my plot lines. The Trojan Horse Traitor plays off of the Greek Trojan horse incident. The Fall of Thor's Hammer incorporates the funny Norse myth about Thor in a wedding dress. The Fay's Apprentice integrates the Ancient British legend of Morgan le Fay's apprenticeship to Merlin.

My Levi Prince series is set in Terracaelum, a realm populated by mythical creatures yet ruled by a human man and a human woman. The name Terracaelum comes from the Latin words terra (earth) and caelum (sky or heaven). Camp Classic is on Classic Island, a tiny island in the middle of Lake Superior. Unknown to most of the campers, the far northern cliff of Castle Island is the connecting point with Terracaelum, which is invisible except when the drawbridge is lowered. Besides the director and his wife, Camp Classic's F is not human; it is comprised of elves, dwarves, and pixies who pass for humans to the campers who are unaware that they left Castle Island and entered Terracaelum. Beyond the castle live many other mythical creatures — dragons, mormos, basilisks, dvergar, harpies, griffins, rocs, unicorns, merweavers, lake monsters, and a shape-shifting demon sorcerer named Deceptor.

While my flawed but lovable  main character Levi is a homeschooler, making him appealing to home-educated kids, he is also relatable to traditional-schoolers and even adults. While especially geared toward ten to sixteen year olds, readers of any age will enjoy watching Levi tackle archery, fencing, canoeing, Dragon jousting, Latin verbs, history dates, and, of course, Deceptor and his evil cronies in their bids to take over Terracaelum.

If you're interested in reading Levi's stories, you can buy my books on Amazon in either paperback or Kindle formats. I've included the buy links and blurbs for each book below.

Left on Castle Island to attend Camp Classic, Levi Prince finds himself at the center of an enchanted world of amazing abilities, cloudy motives, and wicked beings that will challenge his very spirit. He begins to form friendships, but life at camp becomes more confusing as questionable activities and uncertain agendas bring about conflict that tests his character in ways you never expected. Finally, faced with a friend's betrayal, Levi is forced to confront true evil. Will he find the courage to stand his ground and to become the hero he was always meant to be?

Stay out of the cellar! One of Camp Classic's firmest rules puts Levi in a dilemma when he hears banging on the cellar door. Could it be a Lake Superior sailor driven into Terracaelum's underbelly by a storm? Or is it one of the Dvergar trying to lure a foolish camper to certain death? It's only the first night back in the castle and already Levi must make a potentially disastrous decision: Should he disobey Mr. Dominic at the risk of his own life? Or do as he's told, possibly leaving some poor sailor to wander in darkness until he starves?

On Levi's third summer at Camp Classic, he is torn between two responsibilities. On the one hand, his parents expect him to watch over his little sister Abby, who has no clue their summer camp is a haven for mythical creatures. On the other hand, Mr. Dominic wants him to train at For Terra, a full day's hike away from his sister, because of Levi's previous encounters with the demon sorcerer Deceptor. Although he enjoys training with his friends, Levi finds life at Fort Terra difficult thanks to the ongoing tension between him and Hunter and the stress of having his former kidnapper Regin as a chaperone. When the woman Regin claims to be the evil sorceress Anna appears, Levi faces a whole new challenge.

Takeover Thursday with J.M. Hackman

J.M. is here to share a bit about herself and her latest release. She's offered to give away a copy of the first book in the series, Spark (print copy - US ONLY or electronic copy - US or international). You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends March 14, 2019. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you.)

Q:  What message do you hope your readers take away from your story?
A:  Both Spark and Flare are about Brenna's adventures in an alternate reality. She has ADHD and because of this often feels like she doesn't fit in. That's her constant struggle— am I good enough? What do I do right? What makes me valuable?

I'd love for each reader to come away from The Firebrand Chronicles with the knowledge that they are valuable, that whatever they're most passionate about makes them special and irreplaceable, no matter what mistakes they make.

Q:  What can you tell us about your next project?
A:  There's one last book in The Firebrand Chronicles. It's written but needs revising. So I'll be working on that. But I have another project coming out. I'm part of a group called the Ever Afters. Sometime in April, the Ever Afters plan to release Encircled, an anthology of fairy tale retellings. My short story is titled "The Songbird's Citadel," and it's a sci-fi/fantasy twist on the tale "The Nightingale."

Q:  What book do you wish you'd written?
A:  Garden Spells by  Sarah Addison Allen. It's magical realism. I love the plot, and the quirky characters, and the way the author can turn a beautiful phrase into pure poetry. It's fantastic.

Q:  What's your favorite writing-related book?
A:  Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Although there are other books out there that talk more about the craft of writing, her hilarious stories helped me realize all authors deal with doubt and hubris in equal measures, but it's perfectly, reassuringly normal.

Q:  Now, a few fun questions. What famous person would you like to meet and why?
A:  Do they have to be alive? LOL! Because I think it would be fascinating to talk to Jesus or Madeline L'Engle. Hmm ... maybe Julie Andrews, mostly because I've loved her work and she seems like a lovely person.

Q:  Oh, I love Julie Andrews! What's one things about you that would surprise your readers?
A:  Despite my love of the speculative genre, before my children were born I wrote Christian romance. I currently have two finished romantic comedies buried in my filing cabinets. I keep waffling on whether to polish them up or leave them where they are.

Q:  Ooh, that's interesting! Perhaps we'll see them one day. If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you need to have with you?
A:  I'd need Coke Zero, dark chocolate (preferably dark chocolate M&Ms), and my tablet since it's loaded with tons of e-books. (I can't have my family with me because someone needs to eventually miss me and call 911!)

Ha! I like that! I agree with the dark chocolate and e-books/tablet. Thanks for stopping by. I'm sure my readers will enjoy getting to know you bit better.

Back cover copy for Flare (Book #2):

Brenna travels to Linneah via portal to visit her boyfriend Baldwin, only to find heartbreak. Betrayal. A serious case of never, ever wanting to see him again. Worst summer vacation ever.

So when her best friend Tiny invites her on a road trip to meet Tiny’s fiancĂ©, Brenna jumps at the chance. Even if her mother disapproves. Even if it’s through a dangerous travel portal. Even if Tiny has never met this fiancĂ© handpicked by her dad. Anything’s better than staying in Linneah.

But the trip disintegrates into disaster. The two friends are separated, Brenna is kidnapped, and not only are Brenna’s Firebrand skills tested to the limit, she must participate in the dangerous event, Starfall . . . or go home. Broke. Alone. With a shattered heart. So not fun.

And then as if that’s not bad enough? Brenna discovers a plot that could spell disaster for everyone she holds dear. And no one believes her.

Can she prevent a bloody government takeover? And what will become of Brenna’s broken heart?

J. M. Hackman loves thunderstorms, bookstores, and happy endings. She's never met a reading nook she didn't like and prefers soul talk to small talk. When she's not writing, she spends time with her two munchkins and her handsome husband who supports her in this crazy profession. Her days are filled with writing stories, consuming massive quantities of dark chocolate, and looking for portals to other worlds. You can find her at www.jmhackman.com

"The Crescent Stone" by Matt Mikalatos

My review...

Madeline and Jason agree to a year of service in Sunlit Lands in exchange for their greatest desire. In Madeline’s case, it’s to have a more normal life—one where she can breathe without issue. Jason is battling his own personal demons. They will soon learn, however, that things are not as they were led to believe.

The latest from Mikalatos is the first installment in a new YA fantasy series. It contains an interesting cast of characters. The cover will likely catch the reader’s eye, and it’s a good fit for the story. I’ve never read a story from this author before, and I was impressed with this imaginative tale, which included humor and numerous twists. Mikalatos gives the reader a few things to ponder along the way, as some relevant social issues are explored in this tale. An excerpt from the next book is included. I enjoyed the additional items, such as: a creative map, a detailed cast of characters, and various stories/songs/proverbs/poems from Sunlit Lands.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher as part of the Tyndale Blog Network, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.

"before I knew you" (Choices Matter, volume 1) by Beth Steury

My review...

Seventeen-year-old Preston has quite a past, but he is ready to make some changes, especially after he meets Maggie, a new girl in town. She doesn't know about his past, and she's sure he's out of her league anyway. Preston's afraid of the truth coming out … which it always seems to have a way of doing. Maggie and Preston learned that all choices have consequences.

This is Steury's debut YA novel, and it's along the same lines as her blog: "Waiting matters... Because YOU Matter." It's the first in a trilogy entitled "Choices Matter." If you have a teen in your life, you may want to consider sharing this with them (though you should read it yourself first). The story is told in alternating, first person POV (Preston and Maggie). The scenarios are realistic and relatable, and Steury accurately captures the teenage voice (as well as the drama, angst, etc). The author tackles tough issues, such as intimacy in a teen relationship and the associated consequences. The characters demonstrate that choices do matter. The pace is quick, thanks to relatively short chapters. The story is well-written overall, and there is just a touch of mystery thrown in. It will be interesting to see what happens next, as the ending does pave the way for the sequel.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a review.

EXCERPT

One of the really nice things about the office is that it’s an old farmhouse. Mrs. Baron stocks it with just about everything because, like all southern girls, she likes to be prepared.

Warmed from the shower and in sweats, I drink my tea. Bennett sits at the table with me, while Mrs. Baron hums in the background. She’s throwing something together for us to eat while we wait out the storm.

“Well, Watermelon Queen, was your first day all you expected it to be?” Bennett asks.

“Let’s just say it was more than I planned for,” I dryly reply.

Bennett laughs.

“This is going to be a fun year. I’ve always wanted a little sister, and now I have one,” he says.

Takeover Thursday with Krysten Lindsay Hager

Can Dreams Come True? (Book One of the Cecily Taylor Series) by Krysten Lindsay Hager
Contemporary YA fiction

Blurb:
Cecily has always had a huge crush on singer Andrew Holiday and she wants to be an actress, so she tags along when her friend auditions for his new video. However, the director isn’t looking for an actress, but rather the girl next door—and so is Andrew. Cecily gets a part in the video and all of Andrew’s attention on the set. Her friend begins to see red and Cecily’s boyfriend is seeing green—as in major jealousy. A misunderstanding leaves Cecily and her boyfriend on the outs and Andrew hopes to pick up the pieces as he’s looking for someone more stable in his life than the models he’s dated. Soon Cecily begins to realize Andrew understands her more than her small-town boyfriend—but can her perfect love match really be her favorite rock star?

Excerpt 1...

I started to feel anxious after lunch. After all, I had been an Andrew fan for a long time, and even though I had seen him in person, this was a huge deal to get to meet him. What if he wasn’t what I had imagined? I didn’t expect him to fawn over me or anything, but what if he was rude or ignored me? It would kill my fantasy of him as being this sweet, quiet, sensitive songwriter who wore his heart on his sleeve while also being kind of a loner/rebel with just a touch of bad boy in him. Oh man, I would be crushed if he didn’t notice me or worse—if he ended up flirting with Harlow.
In all his magazine interviews Andrew always said looks weren’t important to him, and what he noticed in a girl was if she was true to herself. He said he went for “bright girls who were sweet and easy to be with.” Now that I thought about it, that was the kind of fake crap magazines put out about all the teen celebrities. It was like when I saw Lawrence Claibourne, my favorite actor who claimed to be Mr. I’m-just-looking-for-a-sweet-girl-to-read-poetry-to on a red carpet with a model whose boobs were falling out of her dress and had overdone the lip fillers—I mean, you just knew he wasn’t into her for her personality. But Andrew wasn’t like Lawrence. Andrew seemed so sincere and deep. Lawrence had a smirk and you could tell he was a player, but Andrew seemed like he had been hurt and needed to find the right girl who he could open up to and learn to trust again. . .or at least that’s what he said in his last interview.
The final bell rang and my heart shot up to my throat. This was it. I was on my way to meet my crush. From now on, any dreams of him would be marred by the reality I was about to face.
Was it better to keep wondering what if and keep the fantasy alive or to go and actually meet him?

Excerpt 2...

Okay, if I wanted to do a good job in this music video then I had to become this character and show how she and Andrew were soulmates who would recognize each other just by walking by.
Andrew got into position and the director yelled, “Action.”
Andrew and I began to walk toward one another. He glanced away from me and then right as we got closer, he gave me an intense, longing stare which almost took my breath away. I lost all focus and forgot what I was supposed to do. It was like time was standing still and we were the only two people in the world.
“Cut!” Dimitri said. “Perfection. You absolutely nailed the look, Cecily. Let’s try it again, but this time the focus will be on Andrew’s angle.”
My face felt warm as I walked back on my mark to go again. How did I get my look so perfect when I hadn’t done anything intentional? Andrew’s gaze had been so overwhelming I had forgotten everything I was meant to do. Then it hit me—my look hadn’t been an act. Whatever I did in the scene was how I actually felt in the moment and if Dimitri said it was the perfect look then it meant I must have been showing my true feelings for Andrew. How embarrassing! Did people think I was acting or was my stupid kiddie crush apparent to everyone now? Andrew would probably take the security guys aside and tell them there was a stalker present and to quietly escort me off the premises without making a scene. The whole crew would laugh over how the dumb star struck kid got caught up in her obsession with the pop star. I never should have done this. At least before I had the fantasy, now Andrew was aware of my existence and instead of remembering the connection we had earlier, he’d see me as just another fan.

"The Viking's Chosen" by Quinn Loftis ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Quinn Loftis has graciously offered to give away THREE (3) electronic copies of her latest release. You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends February 9, 2018. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you and pass on your information.)

The story behind the story...

The Viking's Chosen happened because I was approached by Clean Teen Publishing. They said they liked my writing style and saw a shortage of YA historical romances out there and thought I'd be a good fit to write one. They suggested Vikings since they are all the rage right now. It was a fun book to write.

Q&A with Quinn...

Q: What is something that your readers would be surprised to know about you?
A:  I like scary movies, but I can't watch them by myself … or at night, LOL!

Q:  What are some of the books in your TBR pile?
A:  All the books in the Morganville Vampire series after book 7 and the Left Behind series (I've read it once, but that was 15 years ago.)

Q:  Do you have any specific rituals for you when you work, such as music, a particular snack, or a specific pen?
A:  I always pray before I start writing.

Q:  What book do you wish you had written?
A:  That's an easy one: Harry Potter, lol!

Q: What projects are you currently working on?
A:  Book 2 in the Viking series, book 11 in the Gray Wolves series, and book 5 in the Gypsy Healer series

Q:  Finally, what advice you have for new writers?
A:  Don't go into this career expecting to get rich, because you will be sorely disappointed. Expect to be criticized. You can't make everyone happy, and that sucks. Strive to make every book better than the last. Read, read, read, and write, write, write.

Thanks so much for being here, Quinn. I can't wait to read those books you're working on :)

My review...

General Torben has heard the prophecy: He will take a foreign bride. She will be a seer and healer like his mother.

Princess Allette is betrothed to King Cathal, and she is anything but excited, as he is an evil, abusive man. However, she is determined to do what she can to help her family and her country.
Unexpected events will bring Torben and Allette together, and they will be asked to make sacrifices which could impact the future of many.

This book is different than what I usually read. However, I have read other books by Loftis, and that led me to give this book a try … and I’m glad I did. Quinn is a master at crafting compelling and intriguing stories. While her books are often geared toward the YA market, adults will no doubt enjoy them, as well. The Viking’s Chosen, an action-packed historical romance, is no exception. It quickly engages the reader, and the characters, especially the heroine, are relatable. The story is told in alternating POV’s, and the transitions flow smoothly. Allette is feisty, intelligent, and strong. Torben is loyal, protecting, trustworthy, and brave. You can’t help but root for good to win out over evil. The ending may well leave the reader saying, “There better be a sequel … soon!”

Some of my favorite quotes are:

  • “Each of us must decide for ourselves what we want in this life. We have to choose to pursue our happiness, not just hope that what our mothers and fathers want for us will suddenly happen.
  • “You are the master of your own life. There will be bumps and detours along the way, but at every turn, there will be a choice. Do not let yourself become a victim of your circumstances. You are too special for that fate.”

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.

Takeover Thursday with Krysten Lindsay Hager

I want to extend a warm welcome to Krysten Lindsay Hager. She's here to discuss her latest release, Dating the It Guy. Here's Krysten...

The idea for Dating the It Guy came about when I was watching a biography on TV about John F. Kennedy Jr. They were talking about the stress on his wife, Carolyn, and I started wondering what it’d be like to date someone like him back in high school with all the pressures and scrutiny around him. So I created Emme Trybus, a normal high school girl who begins dating Brendon Agretti, the son of a well-known senator (and the grandson of another senator). Brendon is popular, an overachiever, and seems like he leads a charmed life. His ex-girlfriend Lauren is also an overachiever and has that perfect preppy look, and Emme always feels less than in her presence. Emme begins to feel out of place in his world. However, Brendon begins opening up to Emme about the pressures that surround him. We start to see his “perfect life” comes with more stress and drama than she realized.

This was an interesting book to write because I began it a few years ago and then came back and rewrote and added scenes as I had become aware of more pressures Brendon would be under and Emme’s response to being in his world. Writing the book made me laugh and had me choke up a few times with tears.

Book trailer...

Short Excerpt:
“By the way, did you hear Lauren got into Senator Agretti’s old school?”

“Seriously? I wonder if she applied there because Brendon did,” I said.

Margaux snorted. “Duh, of course. Seriously, she might as well just pee on him to mark her territory.”

“Margaux, shut up,” Kylie said.

“Whatever. Anyway, the important thing is if Brendon knew she was applying there,” Margaux said. "Em, do you think he knew?”

I hoped Lauren was just trying to follow Brendon, but what if they had planned this whole thing while they were dating? What if he convinced her to apply there so they could go to college together, wear matching American flag sweaters with big scarves while drinking hot chocolate, and jump into leaf piles just like a preppy clothing catalog. At least now I didn’t have to worry about them reciting poetry to one another in South Bend, but still, what if they had made plans to go to school together?

“Don’t worry about it,” Kylie said. “She was probably trying to follow him—like she always does. She’s so pathetic.”

Kylie was trying to make me feel better, but Lauren was far from pathetic. After all, she was pretty much the “Most Likely to Succeed” poster girl. While she was out overachieving and saving the world without messing up her perfect, bouncy hair, I was trying to get through each day. I tried to push away the image of Lauren and Brendon holding hands and drinking hot chocolate under a stadium blanket.

My review...

High school sophomore Emme never expected that one day she’d be dating the It Guy at her school, popular senior Brendon, who just happens to be a senator’s son and hot! Unfortunately, his ex, Lauren, isn’t quite ready to give up on him, and she is determined to do all she can to destroy the budding relationship between Emme and Brendon. Emme has always relied on numerology and horoscopes to help her with her decisions, but that’s not working for her at the moment, especially with her grandparents’ failing health thrown into the mix. Will she be able to put her insecurities aside and tackle life head-on, trusting her own instincts? Why does high school, and life, have to be so complicated?

Hager’s authentic characters will resonate with readers of all ages as they are immersed in the story—complete with teen drama and angst, but also the relationships which make it all worthwhile. Vivid descriptions will make the reader feel they are a part of the storyline. The teens are realistic and well-rounded, and they clearly demonstrate the rollercoaster of emotions typical of the age group. Reading a book by Hager is like chatting with your best girlfriend. It is likely that readers will see themselves, and those they know, in the characters.
