Takeover Thursday with Carrie Fancett Pagels ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Carrie is here to discuss her latest story, which is included in the First Love Forever novella collection. She has a giveaway going on through the month of April. You can find the Rafflecopter link at the end of this post.  Here's Carrie...

The Story Behind the Story

Brides of Mackinac was a three book novel proposal I had done a few years back. I wrote the complete first novel, which had two previous titles before becoming part of the "My Heart Belongs" series from Barbour as My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island: Maude’s Mooring. I’d been waiting for another publisher to take a look at the proposal, and about the time they looked at the series, I got an offer from Barbour for the single title. Sadie’s story in “His Anchor” is a condensed version of what would have been the novel. The third story isn’t under contract as of yet.

Further “story behind the story” is that Maude Welling, Sadie Duvall’s best friend, almost didn’t get to be the heroine of that first novel. Maude had to have a ton of “therapy.”  I’d struggled with Maude, who was rather quirky and on the OCD side, and I finally called in the “big guns” to help me. I’d known Rachel Hauck of My Book Therapy for years and had been one of the early MBT helpers. She came in, took a look at Maude, and suggested that she might seem a little too “crazy” for the readers. That was pretty funny.  As a former psychologist I love quirky and interesting and different kinds of people. And now I needed to make Maude more normalized. Maybe a little more like Sadie Duvall. Hmmm.

My husband and son and rooted for Sadie to take over Maude’s story from the beginning. Sadie has a much more sympathetic past than Maude does, for one thing. Her story really pulls at the heartstrings. But I refused to feel sorry for Sadie. And I kept fighting her and my hubs and son as far as taking over.  I even went so far as to write Maude’s story but from Sadie’s version. That’s when I’d realized she really had to have her own story. But I couldn’t have a whole lot of overlap. So when I revised My Heart Belongs on Mackinac Island (which had been Maggie Award Unpublished Inspirational Novel  finalist Grand Exposé),

I cut a lot of Sadie’s scenes and Robert’s and moved those to Sadie’s story. I’m so glad I let Sadie have her own story and Maude have hers. I hope the reader enjoys Sadie’s story as much as I enjoyed bringing her to life!

Blurb: His Anchor by Carrie Fancett Pagels

1894 – Mackinac Island, Michigan: Robert Swaine, a ship captain, returns to Mackinac Island where his first love, Sadie Duvall struggles to support her siblings. Will she anchor him to the island he has vowed to leave behind?

Excerpt (Note: This story has a Prologue. Here’s the first scene from Chapter One)

Sadie shaded her eyes and scanned the deep sapphire waters of Lake Huron, to no avail – Captain Swaine must gave taken her words to heart twelve months ago. Her gut clenched. The Straits of Mackinac hemmed her in, their zig-zagging strong currents too strong for her to escape. And now she was truly stuck, without the strength to procure her way out.
Jack Welling raced down the hillside toward her, dodging the cows who were making their way up the hill to the fields near the former fort, now being converted from a National to Michigan State park. So much had changed. Ma gone. Pa missing. Bea working.
Slowing his pace, Jack hooted and then stopped, bent over, and clutched his knees and panted. “Hiya, Sadie!”
 “How’re you doing, Jack?”
As he looked up, a knowing expression creased his eyebrows. “Prob’ly the same as you and Bea and Garnet and Opal.”
“Maybe so.” At least the boy had a father and his older sister to care for him. And someone to pay the bills.
The boy straightened. “Sorry that carrot-top fired you from Mrs. Luce’s place.”
Sadie flinched. “She didn’t fire me – Greyson’s wife said they didn’t need my services any longer.”
Jack shrugged. “Same thing.”
No more wages, regardless. “And all this activity and building on the island yet no one willing to hire me except for Mr. Foster.” At the tavern.
“Maude’s still lookin’ around for a job for you.”
“And we’re grateful for Bea working at your inn.”
“Yeah.” He rolled his eyes.
“I hope she’s behaving.” They badly needed her position.
“Sure! Hey, guess what? Mr. Hardy, the owner of the Mackinaw City sawmill, stayed with us – givin’ folks estimates for buildin’ more cottages on the bluffs – and I asked him about your dad.” He scrunched up his face. “He ain’t seen him. Good thing since somebody got killed down there recently and it weren’t him.”
“Yes, poor man. Thank God for small mercies it wasn’t Pa.”
“Huh? How can mercy be small?” Jack scrunched up his face.
“You’re right.”
“I’m right a lot!” He grinned but a shadow quickly passed over his face. “Wouldya please write my uncle Robert and tell him to get back over here – he’ll listen to you.”
“What do you. . .”  She patted at his arm but hit air as he swooshed away from her and raced the rest of the way down the hill.
She pressed a hand to her chest, sure she felt her heart beating through her worn cotton blouse. Why did Jack think Robert would listen to her? Was she truly responsible for him not returning?
“Sadie girl!” As he passed by in his dray, Mr. O’Reilly called out. “Ye’re lookin’ lovely lass!” He winked and pulled off his blue work cap, revealing a shock of thick white hair.
If his idea of lovely was being dressed in a dowdy tavern maid’s uniform, then lovely she was. “Top of the day to ye, Mr. O’Reilly!” She heard the man’s laugh carry over the sound of his draft horse’s heavy ‘clip clops’ down the street.
A gust of lake breeze ruffled her skirt and apron. Sunlight flickered over the Straits of Mackinac as a ship headed toward the port. Not Robert’s ship. Why did that realization bring so much sadness with it? Because once upon a time, she imagined her future only and ever intertwined with his.

The Blessing of Mackinac! By Carrie Fancett Pagels

The first time I went to Mackinac Island, despite living just an hour away, was when I was sixteen and looking for a job. I was a little nervous about both applying for work and living away from home. I’d been a babysitter for years but had never worked in a business. My father had been dealing with neurological complications (he later had a stroke) and had lost his job, and things were tight at home. I had no idea what a blessing it would be to live and work on Mackinac Island, nor that four decades later I’d have a book published, set there! A book that received a Romantic Times Book Reviews Top Pick even!

I lived in a large house, Pine Cottage, which was owned by my boss’s mother-in-law. Located off the main street, up a steep hill, the cottage had a lovely side yard. We had a rack out front for our bicycles, the main form of transportation on the island. I initially shared a room with a bunch of other girls, I think six of us in a large room, but these college gals were way ahead of innocent Yooper me! Thankfully, the house mother put me over with a different room with another roommate. My roomie was older but was a quiet young woman who didn’t have as many wild “tales” to tell as the first group I had!

On my days off, I always took a bike ride around the island (about 7 ½ miles), stopping to wade out into the rocky-bottomed water which was cold but refreshing. The gorgeous sights of the island and the water soothed my soul. I also liked to go sit in the park and watch the tourists and look at the yachts in the harbor and the ferries coming in. My lunch was usually grabbed at Doud’s Market, a fixture on the corner near Fort Mackinac and the park.

It wasn’t until years later that a story percolated. I was a psychologist and met up with my friend, Rosemary, whose family was from the island. We made some visits around the island to places and she gave me some background that fueled my imagination. Move forward a couple of more decades, and that story finally made it onto the page. I am delighted this novel was selected to be part of the “My Heart Belongs” series from Barbour. And was I ever happy to sign eleven cases of books while I was up North all of July promoting this book!

One liner: A journalist posing as wealthy industrialist loses his heart to an heiress working as a maid at the Grand Hotel.

Blurb: Is anyone really who they say they are? Journalist Ben Steffan pursues a story about men pursuing heiresses for their money. Abandoned by her fiancé, island resident Maude Welling yearns to run the inn she’s supposed to inherit. When her father refuses permission for her to take over the inn, she seeks to prove herself by working incognito as a maid at the Grand Hotel, where Ben is staying. Even Maude’s supervisor at the Grand isn’t who she pretends to be—she’s a rich, reclusive eccentric—and Maude fears she plans to buy her inn. Ben is within reach of an exposé that will launch him to his coveted position of assistant editor. If Ben’s paper publishes his article then Maude, who has captured his heart, may reject him. If Ben doesn’t deliver a scoop to his editor, another journalist will receive the promotion.  To claim her inheritance, Maude must marry and live on the island, but Ben’s journalism career is at the Free Press in Detroit. When scandal threatens to destroy them all, will they be able to survive the truth with their love intact?

Thanks Leslie for letting me visit on your blog! I have a second book, which released in June, as part of Seven Brides for Seven Mail-Order Husbands, also from Barbour!

Carrie Pagels Fancett: Dime Novel Suitor

When a British dime novel enthusiast finds himself flat broke in Kansas, he discovers what western life and true love are all about. Barden Granville IV grew up at Cheatham Hall, Kent, England, devouring cowboy stories and dreaming of the day he, with no prospects of inheriting estate nor title, could escape to the American frontier. Educated and ordained an Anglican priest, his trip to America is his “last hurrah” before accepting a vicarage in a small town far from his aristocratic family’s estate. When a series of misadventures leaves him without money and stranded, he must take up employment immediately.

After her father dies, widow Caroline Kane becomes the owner and proprietor of a restaurant and inn. She also assumes responsibility for her five teenaged siblings. Caroline’s busybody married sister insists that an Englishman who purports to answer an ad for help, is the perfect candidate for Caroline’s next husband. While she’s relieved to have help, Caroline finds Barden’s primary asset to be his silver tongue. When his efforts finally bring fruit, Barden receives word from England that could leave Caroline worse off than before, for her heart will leave with him. Will Barden answer his heart and God’s call in Kansas, or will his family responsibilities compel him to leave his dreams behind?

"Saving the Marquise's Granddaughter" by Carrie Fancett Pagels

In celebration of her latest release, Carrie has graciously offered to give away a copy of the book (paperback or e-book). To enter, see the Rafflecopter box at the bottom of this post. (Contest ends July 15, 2016.) If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you and pass on your information. Good luck!

A Word  from Carrie…

Saving the Marquise’s Granddaughter was inspired by genealogical research on my mother’s side of the family. I discovered an interesting ancestor, Johan Adam Rousch, who had nine of his ten sons fight in the American Revolution! Johan was given a monument by the Sons of the American Revolution. I think his wife, Susannah, deserved one, too!

Q & A with Carrie…

Q:  What would you be doing if you were not an author?

A:  I was a psychologist for 25 years, working with young people. I trained hard and long and have a Ph.D. in School Psychology from the University of South Carolina, one of the top-rated doctoral programs in School Psychology in the country. But my arthritis worsened to the point that I could no longer work as a psychologist.

Q:  What is your favorite writing-related book?

A:  For writing Christian historical romance, I’d recommend anything by Susie Mary Warren and also Julie Lessman’s workbook.

Q:  Who are some of your favorite authors to read?

A:  I love so many! Right now I’m listening to Karen Witemeyer’s new romance. I’m waiting on Tamera Alexander’s next novel and on Julie Lessman’s next historical romance. The Christy finalists in historical romance were amazing this year! I loved Roseanna White’s book of her heart and Elizabeth Camden’s, too!  Julie Klassen’s Regencies. Melanie Dickerson’s Fairy Tale Retellings. I’d have to fill up the page if I add more authors whose work I love, so I better stop!

Q:  How did you decide to write historical romance?

A:  I started out thinking I wanted to write historical then realized I didn’t care for books that didn’t have a romance in them. I definitely wanted romance in my stories because that is what I love to read. But I do appreciate historical detail. So I’ve tried to balance both in my writing.

Q:  What are your thoughts on the publishing industry in general? In relation to self-publishing/Indie Publishing?

A:  These are amazing times right now! Authors who were waiting forever to get their big break now have the option of indie publishing and selling right to their readers.  It is so difficult to break into the bigger CBA publishing houses. If an author wants to build a following, it seems to me indie publishing is the way to go. I consider myself a hybrid author. I have indie published books, including my novella The Fruitcake Challenge” which was a Selah Award finalist, a Family Fiction Book of the Year finalist, and which earned me RWA PAN status (Professional Author Network) and has almost 100 Reviews on Amazon! I have told my agent, Joyce Hart, and others that I believe every author should do at least one indie book to get a better feel for all that is involved with getting a book out there. On the other hand, it is a ton of work and I am very grateful to have contracts with traditional publishers such as White Rose/Pelican, who published Saving the Marquise’s Granddaughter, and Barbour Publishing, who will be publishing two of my novellas in collections and also a novel.

Another thing about traditional publishers, something that surprised me with Guidepost Books, who published my short story “Snowed In” in A Cup of Christmas Cheer collection, was just the sheer number of readers they could reach so easily. I guess I should not have been surprised, since I’m also a Guideposts reader! And with Barbour, they have placement in so many stores and with (I’ve heard) Walmart, which is something that the vast majority of indies just don’t have—that placement. I feel very blessed to have contracts with traditional CBA publishers and appreciate all they do for authors. I also think there is a place for indies.

Q:  What can you tell me about your next project?

A:  I am so excited to be part of a fun collection from Barbour!  Gina Welborn spearheaded “The Blue Ribbon Bride Collection” with nine authors. We all have stories set at state fairs, and all of the other authors’ stories sound amazing!!! Mine is called “Requilted with Love” and is about a quilter who has lost two fiancés and now finds herself falling for a balloonist—a really risky profession! It’s set at the Lansing, Michigan 1889 state fair, which was a really special one because they created an amazing fairground, hoping it would become permanent.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog. I'm sure my readers will enjoy getting to know you a bit better!
