First Line Friday

Happy Friday! It's time for First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books.

It's time to grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line. Today on First Line Friday, I'm featuring a book from one of my many TBR piles,  Cinder by Marissa Meyer. I have a number of friends who love this book and have tried to get me to read it for years. Well, it's finally getting close to the top of one of my piles.😊

And the first line is ...

The screw through Cinder's ankle had rusted, the engraved cross marks worn to a mangled circle.

About the book...

Cinder, a gifted mechanic in New Beijing, is also a cyborg. She's reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's sudden illness. But when life becomes entwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she finds herself at the center of a violent struggle between the desires of an evil queen and a dangerous temptation.

Cinder is caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal. Now she must uncover secrets about her mysterious past in order to protect Earth's future.

This is not the fairy tale you remember. But it's one you won't forget.

Let me know the first line of the book closest to you and then head over to Hoarding Books to see who else is participating.

If you're a blogger or just a social media-er, we'd love for you to join us, too!

"Mark of the Raven" (The Ravenwood Saga #1) by Morgan L. Busse ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Morgan's publisher has offered to give away a hard copy of the book (US ONLY).  You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends December 6, 2018. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you.)  Here's Morgan...

The story behind the story...

All of my stories begin with a scene, usually while I'm doing dishes or folding laundry. I see a situation in my mind and immediately I start asking who are these people? How did they get there? And what's going to happen next? This is how Mark of the Raven began. I saw this scene in my mind where a young woman is standing over the bed of a man. Her mission is to kill him, but she hesitates. So I asked who is she? Why is she here? And what's going to happen next?

If you want to find out the answers to my questions, you'll have to read the book :)

Q&A with Morgan...

Q:  What message do all readers take away from your story?
A:   That no matter your background, your family circumstances, your current situation, you can always change. You are not chained to your past. There is always hope. And that hope is in God. But the journey is not always an easy one.

Q:   What character in the book do you relate to the most and why?
A:   I relate to Selene in the fact that for many years, I hid behind a façade. I was afraid of people knowing who I really was (this geeky, intellectual tomboy). I was especially afraid if Christians knew, they would judge me since I am married to a pastor and there always seems to be certain expectations of a pastor's wife, which I hardly seem to fit. I love that Selene is exploring who she is, and ultimately who God made her to be. That is my journey as well. Learning to love the person God made me to be, no matter what others may think.

Q:  What advice do you have for new authors?
A:  The biggest advice I would give is to not let your writing eclipse your life. Take time for your family. Your kids are going to grow up and move out. But your writing will always be there to come back to. And spend time with your spouse. They can become your biggest cheerleader. And don't forget to live life. Take those walks, enjoy those quiet moments, laugh, and play games. It is life we are trying to write, but if we don't live ourselves, we won't have anything to write about.

Q:  What can you tell us about your next project?
A:  Right now, book two, Flight of the Raven, is done and in edits (and coming out next spring!). In the meantime, I'm currently working on book three. After that, I have a few ideas, but those are between me, agent, and publishers. :)

Q:  What's your favorite writing-related book?
A:  My Emotional Thesaurus. I use it almost every day. I recommend it for every writer!

Q:  Now for a few fun questions. What would you be doing if you weren't an author?
A:  I was on a path to become a scientist and wanted to do research in the medical field. Instead, God had a different path for me.

Q:  What's one thing about you that would surprise your readers?
A:  I'm not really into chocolate. My husband is the chocolate lover and our family.

Q:  Do you have any writing rituals?
A:  I always listen to music, usually a soundtrack or something soothing on YouTube.

Thanks so much, Morgan! I'm sure my readers will enjoy the chance to know a bit more about you.

My review...

Lady Selene just learned of her gift. She is heir to her family’s gift of dreamwalking, which comes with many abilities and responsibilities, including killing. Will she be able to take her mother’s place one day as head of the House of Ravenwood?

I’ve heard about Busse’s books in the past, but I have never read them. Boy, will that change in the future! This book is very different from my typical reads, but it immediately pulled me in, despite being a bit dark at times. The characters and scenes are so vivid. I could easily envision everything. I am a huge fan of the Harry Potter series, and parts of this book reminded me of that book (in relation to the various Houses). The characters’ struggles are relatable, even though this is a fantasy/fiction story, as most people struggle with doing what is right and making wise choices at some point. The story does involve a dual POV, from the perspective of Celine and Damien, the head of the House of Maris. The overall story is a good illustration of our lives, and the part God plays in it when we choose to follow Him. The pace stays active, making this quite the page turner. Sadly, it will be some time before the sequel is released, which is unfortunate, as the book ends on quite the cliffhanger :-(

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.

I recently had the privilege of meeting Morgan and having my books autographed. What an exciting day!

Takeover Thursday with M.R. Anglin ... and a GIVEAWAY!

M. R. Anglin has graciously offered to give away a pdf copy of this new release. You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends September 13, 2018. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you and pass on your information.)

The story behind the story...

In many ways, Prince of the Sun, Princess of the Moon was written for my niece and eldest nephew. The story first came into being when my niece was an infant. I noticed that she tended to sleep during the day and stay up at night while her brother (like the rest of us) went to sleep at night and stayed up during the day. That was the seed of inspiration for the two types of people in my book day people and night people. Day people get energy from the sun while the moon puts them to sleep. Night people get energy from the moon and the sun puts them to sleep.

A secondary inspiration came from my love of the moon. I've always loved astronomy and space, but especially the moon. Sometimes I still stand outside and stare at it for a while. This love may also be behind my fascination with the Bible verse that gave me additional inspiration for the story:

Then spake Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon; and thou, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon. And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
(Joshua 10:12-13 KJV)

Some important names in the story are taken from that verse. In addition, the part in my story where the sun and moon shine in the sky together took inspiration from these verses.

So it was my love for my family, my love of astronomy, and my love of my faith that came together to drive the creation of this book.

Book Blurb...

For years the Moon Palace in the Valley of Aijalon and the Sun Tower in the Plains of Jashar has stood as testaments to the power of the sun and the graciousness of the moon.  Helio and Lumina, Guardians of the sun and moon, kept watch over them and the Prince and the Princess who ruled them.  But the Prince and Princess are missing, and the sun is exhibiting strange behavior.

Now Joshua and his younger sister, Deborah, must untangle a web of lies and deceit to uncover the secret of who they really are and save their world from an imminent disaster brewing in the heavens.  And they must hurry.  Between the earthquakes, the sun and moon standing still in the sky, and the planet Jants hovering closer than it’s ever been, the planet could be torn apart before they have a chance to do something about it.

Excerpt...

“Mr. Delango.” Mrs. Blaine’s voice sliced through the air, jarring Joshua out of his thoughts.
He jumped to his feet. “Yes, ma’am.” All around him snickers erupted as each of his classmates stared at him. Joshua stifled a groan. Judging by their reaction, he had missed something important.
“Perhaps you would like to elaborate on our topic?” Mrs. Blaine motioned to the blackboard.
Joshua winced. He had been staring out of the window and had no idea what she had been talking about.
His best friend, Neil, shrugged. With his skin the complexion of milk and Joshua’s the complexion of chocolate, Neil always said together they were two halves of the best drink ever to have been invented.
But now he shook his head at Joshua. “I tried to warn you,” he mouthed.
Joshua cleared his throat. “You are doing such a fantastic job at explaining this, Mrs. Blaine, I can’t elaborate.” He punctuated the remark with a smile meant to charm her.
“I think you can.” Mrs. Blaine pointed to the board. “Why don’t you come up and fill out this diagram?”
Joshua bit back a comment and made his way to the front of the classroom. The walls were white, and though Mrs. Blaine had set a plastic, potted tree in the corner, there were no posters or papers on the walls . . . just a blackboard where Mrs. Blaine wrote her lessons . . . not at all like the other teachers’ classes with their motivational posters and charts plastered all over the walls.
“No distractions for wayward thinking children,” Mrs. Blaine had said the first time someone remarked on the lack of decoration.
Joshua took the chalk from her and approached the blackboard. Empty spaces in the diagram she had written mocked him, but the words, “Planet/Celestial Body” and “Guardian” were written in separate columns at the top. At least Joshua knew what she was talking about now—the solar system and its Guardians.
“Fill it out.” Mrs. Blaine smirked. “Unless you aren’t smart enough to goof off in class and still retain the information.”
 Again his classmates snickered.
Joshua took a deep breath and studied the diagram. Then he raised his chalk and wrote:
Planet/Celestial Body
Guardian
Sun
Helio
Chern
Maro
Marte
Cero
Melíne
Alandri
Geon
N/A
Geon’s moon
Lumina
Arion
Lucin
Jants
Junen
Rindt
Rin
Nuardt
Urin
Plútz
Plandte

Once finished, he faced Mrs. Blaine. “Is that correct?” He held out the chalk to her.
No one snickered now . . . well, except Neil. His face had surged red with the effort of stifling his laughter. To date, no one had bested Mrs. Blaine at her game to humiliate students who weren’t paying attention. In fact, Mrs. Blaine herself stared at the diagram Joshua had written with her mouth set.
Her eyes narrowed. “Go sit down.”
Joshua shot a smile at her as he went.
“See me after class,” Mrs. Blaine said.
Joshua winced. One smart gesture too far.
“The rest of you, commit this chart to memory.” Mrs. Blaine tapped the blackboard. “It will be on the test next week.”
“Dude, are you crazy?” Neil leaned over to him as Joshua sat. Joshua had to bite back a smile. His friend acted like he had been the one called in after class. “She’s going to hate you now.”
Joshua shrugged. “I’ve got more important things to worry about.”
“Like what?” Neil whispered, copying the diagram.
“Like . . .” Joshua stared full into the sun. “I think the sun is off by two minutes.”
Neil paused in his writing. “What?”
“The sun.” Joshua glanced at Mrs. Blaine to make sure she wasn’t watching. “It should be a little to the right. It’s in the wrong place.”
“Have you been moon-bathing or something? You’re as batty as a night-person.”
Joshua scowled at his friend. “Don’t say that.”
But Neil went on, ignoring Joshua’s annoyance, or . . . more likely . . . not noticing it at all. “The sun can’t be in the wrong place. It’s impossible.”
“Maybe.” Joshua could overlook his friend’s oversight. After all, he didn’t know how offensive the saying was. “But I’ve done the calculations over and over—”
“Done the calculations?” Neil snickered. “What do you know about calculations like those? There are smart people in the capital whose job it is to watch the sun. Don’t you think they would have said something if the sun was in the wrong place?”
“I guess . . .” Joshua faced the front of the class where Mrs. Blaine continued her lesson. He wrote the diagram down, more to get his mind off of the nagging feeling in the back of his mind than because he needed to remember it. Neil was right; Joshua had to be wrong. After all, Helio, the Guardian of the sun, was the epitome of precision. The sun would never drift out of position on his watch.
Still . . . a feeling, like a stone sitting in his stomach, told Joshua something was amiss. He had seen the sun doing strange things before. The other day he thought he saw it flickering, and the day before he was certain its rays were less intense than they should have been.
Joshua swallowed the knot rising in his throat and resisted the urge to fiddle with the gold necklace he wore hidden under his shirt. If something was wrong with the sun, he had more than filling out diagrams and studying for tests to worry about.
 They all did.

"Chaos In the Blink of an Eye: The Aftermath" by Patrick Higgins (Blog Blitz with JustRead Tour)

Patrick Higgins series blitz

Welcome to the Chaos In The Blink of an Eye series blitz and GIVEAWAY, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

ABOUT THE BOOK

On a cold, blustery, snowy Saturday in late November, more than 111,000 people were crammed inside Michigan Stadium, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to watch the Michigan Wolverines play the Ohio State Buckeyes. It was a heated college football rivalry that had spanned more than a century.

No one inside the stadium was prepared for what would soon unfold. As the football was kicked into the snow-filled sky to start the game, long-foretold Bible prophecy came to pass right before their very eyes, causing many to suddenly vanish into thin air. Players disappeared! Coaches disappeared! Members of the media disappeared! Members of both marching bands disappeared! Cheerleaders disappeared, along with many fans in the stands.

In the blink of an eye, the football game was suddenly insignificant. Fear and panic filled the hearts of everyone still inside the stadium. People screamed hysterically and wept uncontrollably, clinging to their departed loved one’s clothing and other effects. But their bodies were nowhere to be found. Many were too afraid to move, for fear that they, too, would vanish.

But what happened inside Michigan Stadium was only a drop in the bucket compared to rest of the world. In the blink of an eye, life as humanity had known it was forever changed when the Great Disappearing Act came to pass. Those still remaining were about to experience the greatest cataclysmic events to ever rock Planet Earth...

Takeover Thursday with Carolyn Walker ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Carolyn is here to discuss her latest release. She's offered to give away an electronic copy of her book. You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends May 24, 2018. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you.) Here's Carolyn...

About the book...
Immortal Descent is a supernatural thriller about one man’s journey into a dark world of ancient creatures, secret societies, and the origin of immortality. Ethan West hopes for a fresh start in college, after a lifetime of pain and loss. But instead he gets a curse—a rebirth that closely resembles a death sentence. Wielding a rare and powerful, yet unpredictable, ability, Ethan becomes a savior and a danger to his world all at once. Buried throughout history, a hidden lineage of immortal ancients are at war. And Ethan’s ability can put an end to it. The only problem is that power this great always comes with an unspeakable price…

Excerpt...

What if one man’s beginning meant everyone else’s end?

Ethan didn’t realize he was screaming until he felt Rue shaking him. His eyes flew open and he stared up at her face and into those bright silver eyes. For the briefest instant, all his fear melted away when he looked up at her. He remembered the shadowed eyes of the woman from the alleyway. These eyes were so different. Never had he seen eyes as hers before, so intense—so bright, so capturing. He held her gaze, almost afraid to look away. If he looked away, what would he see?

Praise for Immortal Descent...

“So much detail and such complex characters! It’s a multi-layered storyline with plenty of twists and turns that really take you on a journey.” – Cindy Walker

Other fans have called Immortal Descent “amazing” and “completely original,” and say it’s a read that is “absolutely impossible to put down!”

Q & A with Carolyn...

Q: Why did you write Immortal Descent?
A:  Immortal Descent originally came to me as a short story idea about a glimpse into the life of an immortal, witnessed by an ordinary man. But after sitting on the idea for a while, I realized the story deserved so much more. I’d read plenty of stories about immortality, but few addressed the origin of it and why. That’s when I thought this would make a great story, so I began researching it. Add to that: dark factions, secret societies, an underground war, plus magic, and you’ve got the world of Immortal Descent.

Q:  Will this be a standalone novel or a series?
A:  This story took on a life of its own. It’s become an epic tale involving ancient lore, taboo history, and the idea of immortality existing in the real world. I’d written a paranormal thriller novel revolving around a (seemingly ordinary but not) young man named Ethan West and his experiences with the supernatural, but there is SO much more. Because of the scope of Immortal Descent’s universe and the extensive history it pulls from, readers can expect a series of books. We’ll be seeing more of Ethan, learn more about the original immortals known as the Lorns, as well as dig deeper into the stories of the antagonists of this book.

Q:  This book is at the threshold of New Adult with the protagonist Ethan West being just 20 years old. Was this intentional?
A:  When the idea came to me as a short story, I was in my early twenties. I was still growing up and the feelings I had during that time in my life were very strong. I always knew I wanted to write a story with a protagonist at that particular age—there isn’t quite a time like it. Just as the teen years are a remarkable time, so is that short span of years thereafter. Ethan suffers from anxiety, struggles with his identity, and has other concerns common for someone his age. He’s turbulent, impetuous, and lost at times, but evolving—all elements that are pivotal to this dark story.

Takeover Thursday with Michelle Levigne ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Michelle Levigne has graciously offered to give away an electronic copy of this new release. You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends February 1, 2018. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you and pass on your information.) Here's Michelle...

DORM RATS: The newest Neighborlee, Ohio story.

Dorm Rats is the rest of the story of Lanie Zephyr growing up, learning to be a semi-pseudo-superhero and guardian of the town of Neighborlee.

Nothing is ever simple when it involves this weird, magical, dimension-spanning town.

Neighborlee first came into existence when I wrote a short story that took place in Divine's Emporium, the central point of all the magical, weird events in town. I wrote several very short stories and made notes for more story ideas. One was published, then the online magazine I was writing them for folded.

I played with the idea of a superhero who was sick and tired of picking up after the mental midgets in the town she was assigned to protect. She quit and moved to another town, where weird things seemed to be happening, and yet no one paid much attention. She encountered another superhero, whose job seemed to consist of kicking grumbling superheroes' butts and getting them to go back to work. That story kind of died out after about one hundred pages. When I came back to it years later, it became the basis for Hero Blues. In it, Jane, a superhero called the Ghost, returns to the town where she was found as an abandoned toddler and learns more details about her mysterious past.

However, before that story was restarted and fixed and finished, I wrote a series of silly short stories dealing with Fae running amok in the mortal world and falling in love, called All's Fae in Love and Chocolate. So I had a good idea of the Fae, their society, their "justice system," and had an idea about a rebellious young Fae (young at 200 years old). Maurice pushes the envelope and gets sentenced to two years of exile in the mortal world, shrunk down to six inches tall, with shrunken magic and wings Tinkerbell wouldn't be caught dead in. He was exiled to … Divine's Emporium. I recycled and added to the first Divine's stories, basically following Maurice as he learned to temper justice with mercy and helped bumbling mortals find true love, guided by Angela, the mysterious proprietor of the shop, who is also his parole officer.

During this time, I roughed a book called Living Proof, about a wheelchair-bound comedienne who worked at a small-town newspaper and happened to be a broken semi-pseudo-superhero. Where else was I to put Lanie Zephyr but in Neighborlee? Lanie and her friends appeared in the books that followed Divine's Emporium. I figured out more about Lanie, how she and her friends landed in Neighborlee, the mystery of the Lost Kids, and other "rules" about their powers and the magical, weird, wonderful things that happen in town. I also used Neighborlee as the "landing" spot where kids from another dimension gathered in a YA fantasy series called The Hunt.

Then Splickety Magazine came into existence. They do flash fiction, which is a story of 1,000 words or less. I took it as a challenge and wrote a story about Lanie's first Christmas after she was adopted out of the orphanage. Midnight Magic dealt with her problem of trusting her new parents with the secret of her semi-pseudo-superhero powers. That was followed by several other stories of Lanie and her friends, Kurt and Felicity, as they figured things out and sometimes got in trouble. For instance, the time they decided they were aliens and tried to "phone home" at Halloween.

By this time I had a number of books planned out to follow Living Proof, but I needed to get from Lanie as the six-year-old adoptee, learning how to be a superhero from reading comic books, to Lanie with the broken back and snarky attitude, spouting one-liners. (As a side note: Lanie's humor is borrowed directly from my brother, a comedian in a wheelchair. I'm serious. He did comedy on a regular basis for many years in the Northeast Ohio area. I have his joke book for a resource.)

Thus, Growing Up Neighborlee was born. The adventures of Lanie, Kurt, and Felicity, dealing with learning their powers, their duties as guardians of Neighborlee, and the general weirdness of the town. The book goes up until Lanie's sophomore year of high school. Dorm Rats, the newest Neighborlee book, starts with a family vacation/research trip to England, then takes Lanie through college (from which comes the title, after discovering a somewhat insidious experiment, manipulating the freshmen class's living situation) and ends with the accident that lands her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life.

See? How the story came to be written is not a simple answer at all.

BLURB...

Lanie and her Lost Kids friends continue growing into their semi-pseudo-superhero powers and responsibilities and learn more about what it means to be a guardian of the odd little town of Neighborlee. Sometimes that meant protecting the rest of the world from the everyday weirdness and magic around them.

The transition from high school to college is marked with challenges and mystical, magical attacks from outside Neighborlee's borders. When the academic game-playing and politics of the local college are used to run a questionable experiment on the entire freshman class, Lanie is there in the middle of it. Sometimes those who realize there's something strange going on aren't as enchanted as Lanie and her geek friends, and it takes a lot of fast talking and faster maneuvering to keep the lid from blowing off the entire town.

The threats grow bigger and the enemies grow meaner, but it's all in a day's work for the guardians of Neighborlee. This is home, and they're willing to pay the price. Sometimes, they do. With their lives.

The really big questions remain: Why are they the way they are, and how can they do the things they can do? At least when they mess up and use their talents in public, most people don't even notice. It's just part of the background weirdness of Neighborlee, Ohio.

Takeover Thursday with Kadee Carder ... and a GIVEAWAY!

I want to extend a warm welcome to Kadee Carder. Kadee has a new release, Indelible, in May. She's here to tell everyone about her trilogy. In celebration, Kadee is giving away an electronic copy of the first book in the series, Insurrection (US ONLY). You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends May 11, 2017. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you and pass on your information.) Now, here's Kadee...

We humans have to be stronger than we ever imagine, love ourselves in the process, and dig in when the ground seems to sink. We not only relish adventures, we create them. That’s the basis of Saylor’s story in my young adult science fiction trilogy, Insurrection. Scintillating gadgetry, crackling romance, and endless riddles fill the pages of this trilogy, in a fresh adventure for the restless reader.
Saylor started out on one adventure and ended up on another. After finding herself on a Caribbean island filled with strange noises, dazzling beaches, and a secret military base, Saylor must clutch the missing pieces of her fate. While harnessing her ability to communicate with deadly weapons of mass destruction, attending the annual gala, and fighting her growing feelings for the hunky Australian soldier, Saylor's instincts become increasingly distressed. Tempted by greed and independence, she must determine what she stands for and on whose side she belongs. Power within her. War without.
They wanted a warrior. They got one.

“I have to stay with my sisters. Protect them. Are you serious, is this a lifelong contract? How about we settle for a two year?” I leaned back in the chair.
A half smile crossed the Commander’s face. He looked amused. He was pleased? “Private, any moment on the field could be your last. Do you understand that?”
“I do, sir.”
“You choose to join the ranks of the elite?”
“I refuse to be toast.” Sitting up and throwing back my shoulders, I let my own smirk play on my lips, recalling my first harried day of training.
His jaw set in place, in a familiar habit. Those navy eyes searched mine.
My lungs filled with vigor and valor, as well as a smidgen of oxygen and a hint of audacity.
“Very well, then.” The Commander sighed, as if he were content from a large meal. He reached down to the side of his desk and pulled open a large drawer, taking out a manila envelope. Withdrawing a long sheet of paper, he placed it on the desk in front of me. “Here are your papers. I am advancing your rank to Private First Class. You are assigned to Echo Company Bravo, effective today. Lieutenant McConnell will remain your supervising officer and provide further instructions at Front Deck.”
I bobbed my head up and down, glancing at the piece of paper. The blanks had already been filled out. He knew what I would choose.
“Sign at the bottom on the back page,” the Commander said, placing a pen parallel to the top of the paper.
I read through the legal jargon, picking up the pen, and scanning the lengthy words. Henceforth. Litigate. Propagate. Disseminate. Prohibited. Deceased.
He leaned forward. “Once we accomplish our goal, we will move on to the next assignment, and then the next, regardless of how long it takes. You do not get to leave this island unless you opt out right now.”
With a flourish, I signed my name. “Then I suppose I need to go suit up.”

Excerpt of book #2...

Silent, smooth, and undefined, he slipped beside me, the two of us watching the horizon and the navy sky, dotted with starlight and swaying under the breeze. In the same way that chocolate nestles down slowly and sweetly on the taste buds, or like a crisp spring morning drifts dew over the dawn, he slid his right arm around me, pulling me close. Satin brushed against cotton and hope dashed against the rough breakwater of changing tides.
“Against my own rules, the other day I allowed in the thought about what losing you would feel like,” Tucker said. “Those monsters hovering over you were a greater risk than the Commander’s orders. Holding you in my arms after you fell, motionless,” he shook his head. “That was the flip of the switch.”
Several clouds meandered overhead, blocking out starlight and passing by, finally clearing out again, and I could once again accept oxygen into my lungs. Letting a smile tease my lips, a rosy glow burned across my cheeks.
“I'm terribly challenged in the area of accepting someone loving me,” I admitted. “I have buckets of love. But they’ve been boxed up, packed away, and I don't know how to carry them."
He turned to me, his eyes glinting in the light, probably imagining my struggle with big gray metal sand castle buckets.
"Well, that's convenient," he answered, somehow moving closer, arms circling, tightening around my waist, until we faced each other. "I have pretty strong arms. I'd be pleased to help you carry them."
Somewhere, innocent lips blew the wispy seeds from a dandelion bud, somewhere passionate lips sputtered rhetoric and jargon, and somewhere else, lips dripped with lies and temptation. But his smoldered.

Excerpt of book #3...

“Look.” I squared off, planting my boots, shoving my fists in the pockets of my pink jacket. “Many of you were sent to Isla Barina, or joined Alliance, thinking your last stop would be the Caribbean. Now you’ve gotten a taste of home. I know the risks ahead outweigh common sense. Breame equipped me to take on this project on my own. I am stable, but to a certain extent, I’m extremely dangerous. I can’t promise—”
“What are you saying, Mack?” Annoyed, Logan scuffed one boot in the dirt.
“You can all jump ship if you want. No judging. It’s not even jumping ship. It’s getting out of the sinking ship and reclaiming dry land. This is the last stop before it’s too late. I’ll be fine on my own. I’ll get a plane and make it overseas and take this on. If I fail, I fail, and nobody’s worse the wiser.”
“Are you kidding?”
“Not at all. I don’t want to take anybody else down with me.”
“That’s not your call,” Logan argued.
“I feel a little insulted right now,” Micah said, whipping her head toward me. “Who says you get all the fun?”
“What?” I asked.
“And the glory,” Logan added.
“No, I’m trying to give you an out here.”
“No, thanks. I love swimming.” Logan leaned back on his heels. “And besides, it’s not up to you.”
“Fine!” I rolled my eyes. “You each get to decide. Your contracts with Alliance are being reviewed, I’m guessing?”
Logan exhaled, before a slight nod. “Possibly. The chips are still settling. Contracts have yet to be renegotiated.”
“Well, then.”
“As far as I’m concerned,” O’Leary jumped in, “I made ECB because I wanted to. And I’ve stuck around this far, so I might as well finish this war.”
Chisholm nodded. “Too many hours of training to give up right when we get the upper hand.”
“But guys,” I tried to wave them off.
“You have no argument.” Canaan radiated enthusiasm.
“We’re the team. You’re stuck with us. Plus, you need someone to run the coms. So, I’m in.”
“There’s no guarantee about this,” I reminded. “We don’t have — we may not—”
“Never had a guarantee,” O’Leary stated. “Except that we’d face dangerous circumstances. That’s why I signed up. You don’t get to kick me out the second it gets rough. Rough is my playground.”
“Yeah!” Other voices agreed, rallying.
Eight faces shifted, eyes shining, reflecting those immense stories.
“Alright, then.” I accepted, my team lining up to face the field and our Commander. “Play ball.”
