"First Cut" by Judy Melinek and T.J. Mitchell

Summary...

Wife and husband duo Dr. Judy Melinek and T.J. Mitchell first enthralled the book world with their runaway bestselling memoir Working Stiff—a fearless account of a young forensic pathologist’s “rookie season” as a NYC medical examiner. This winter, Dr. Melinek, now a prominent forensic pathologist in the Bay Area, once again joins forces with writer T.J. Mitchell to take their first stab at fiction.

The result: FIRST CUT (Hanover Square Press; Hardcover; January 7, 2020; $26.99)—a gritty and compelling crime debut about a hard-nosed San Francisco medical examiner who uncovers a dangerous conspiracy connecting the seedy underbelly of the city’s nefarious opioid traffickers and its ever-shifting terrain of tech startups.

Dr. Jessie Teska has made a chilling discovery. A suspected overdose case contains hints of something more sinister: a drug lord’s attempt at a murderous cover up. As more bodies land on her autopsy table, Jessie uncovers a constellation of deaths that point to an elaborate network of powerful criminals—on both sides of the law—that will do anything to keep things buried. But autopsy means “see for yourself,” and Jessie Teska won’t stop until she’s seen it all—even if it means the next corpse on the slab could be her own.

My review...

I’ve never read anything by this author, but the book blurb sounded like something I’d enjoy. I liked the medical facts throughout, as well as the fact that things were written in a manner that the average person could understand. I love TV shows that deal with forensics, and this book reminded me of them.

Dr. Jessie Teska is a new medical examiner in San Francisco. She's smart and sassy. The author's inside knowledge of the field adds to the realism and enjoyment of the story. The character development is solid and the mystery interesting to watch unfold. There were a few unexpected twists, that I enjoyed. The end did seem a bit abrupt, but perhaps it's a set-up for a sequel.

Fans of crime stories, mysteries, and police procedurals will enjoy the book.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.

"Beneath the Surface" by Lynn H. Blackburn Blog Hop (JustRead Tours) ... a review, recipe, and a GIVEAWAY!

Title: Beneath the Surface
Series: Dive Team Investigations, Book 1
Author: Lynn H. Blackburn
Publisher: Revell
Release Date: March 6, 2018
Genre: Contemporary Romantic Suspense

What Lies Beneath the Surface Could Be Deadly

Ada, Mich.—Dive into the depths of fear with an exciting new romantic suspense novel, Beneath the Surface. This gripping tale from award-winning author Lynn H. Blackburn will capture readers from the first page and won’t let them go until the final, heart-pounding scene.

After a harrowing experience with an obsessed patient, oncology nurse practitioner Leigh Weston moves home to Carrington, North Carolina, to leave behind her troubled past. But when someone tampers with her brakes, she fears the past has chased her into the present.

Homicide investigator Ryan Parker finds fulfillment in his career, but his favorite way to use his skills is as a volunteer underwater investigator with the Carrington County Sheriff’s Office dive team. When the body of a wealthy businessman is discovered in Lake Porter, the investigation uncovers a possible serial killer—one with a terrifying connection to Leigh Weston and deadly implications for them all.

TO PURCHASE*:

My review:

Blackburn’s latest is an engaging suspense with a number of twists and turns that keep the reader guessing. She grabs the reader’s attention from the start with a dead body. The pace is steady throughout, though some parts are a bit far-fetched, even for fiction, and it’s occasionally hard to feel connected to the characters. The romance occasionally overshadows the mystery, and there’s not as much focus on diving as I anticipated (based on the fact that the series is about a dive team). The suspense is solid, so it is certainly worth reading this book. There are a few unanswered questions at the end which will hopefully be answered in the next book, and a sneak peak is included.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher as part of the JustReads blog tour. I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.

My post:

You wouldn’t necessarily know it from the title, but food is a big part of this book, and it doesn’t take long to figure that out! For instance, Ryan is already indulging in his third piece of cake at the beginning of Chapter 3! So, I wanted to spice up this post and do something a bit different: include a recipe I enjoy sharing with friends and family.

I’ve always had a sweet tooth, and I love chocolate and lemon. So, I really like this cookie recipe I found a number of years ago. Depending on the size of the cookies, you get about four dozen cookies from one batch, so it works for office parties, birthday parties, or even keeping freezing to enjoy at a later date. I wanted to share it with my readers.

Lemon Chocolate Chip Cookies
2 cups all-purpose flour                                                          1 ½ teaspoons lemon extract
½ teaspoon baking soda                                                         9 ounces mini chocolate chips
1 teaspoon ground coriander                                                              (about 1 ½ cups)
1 ½ sticks (3/4 cup) salted butter, softened                            1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs

Directions
·       Preheat oven to 300°F.
·       In a medium bowl, combine the flour, baking soda, and coriander with a wire whisk. Set aside.
·       In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar with an electric mixer at medium speed to form a grainy paste. Add eggs and lemon extract. Beat well. Scrape down sides of bowl.
·       Add the flour mixture and the chocolate chips, and blend at low speed until combined. It’s important that you don’t overmix this.
·       Drop the dough by teaspoons onto an ungreased cookie sheet, about 1 ½ inches apart.
·       Bake ~14-15 minutes (This could vary based on your oven. Check on them during the process to be sure they do not burn.) on the center rack. Don’t let them brown.
·       Transfer the cookies to a flat surface to cool.

(makes about four dozen cookies)

Do you have a recipe you like to share with friends and family? If so, feel free to share it in the comments so others can enjoy it. And if you should try the recipe I posted, let me know how you like them.

"Fugitive Spy" by Jordyn Redwood ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Jordyn Redwood has graciously offered to give away a hard copy of this new release. You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends March 9, 2018. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you and pass on your information.)

The story behind the story...

Fugitive Spy was inspired by the nonficiton book Biohazard by ken Alibek. Ken was a high-ranking Russian scientist who headed up their illegal biological weapons program. To say the Russians were "tinkering' with virulent pathogens would be an understatement. They were flat out creating, manufacturing, and stockpiling biological weapons of mass destruction. In the book, he outlines how there was a desire to combine two deadly pathogens into one, and that fueled Fugitive Spy's story line. Much of the things people might find far fetched in the story are actually based on history.

My review...

Dr. Ashley Drager is shocked to see that Casper English, a patient in the ER, has her photo and a tattoo that matches her father’s. Unfortunately, Casper has amnesia and is of little assistance. Ashley senses that the best chance she has of learning what happened to her missing father is to help Casper regain his memories, and she’s determined to do whatever it takes to make that happen. They embark on a journey that will place them in danger at every turn, and Ashley can barely comprehend the information that’s uncovered. Will the clues her father left behind lead them to the answers she’s longing for, as well as to her father, or will it lead them to unimaginable end?

Action and suspense start early on, and they don’t stop until the last page. The pace stays active throughout. This book doesn’t have quite as much of a medical aspect as some of Redwood’s other books. Perhaps the scariest part of the story is that it’s based on factual accounts. As usual, the author’s story is well-researched, but it’s not written at a level that’s too technical for the average reader, who will be flipping pages trying to guess the outcome while following the twists and turns of Redwood’s latest suspense.

A Word from Dr. Mabry…

Almost every story I write has an inciting incident, from my hometown experiences that led to Code Blue to idle thoughts on the loneliness of a parking garage that presaged Stress Test. However, my novella Rx Murder was written to plug a gap. Having changed publishers, there was a year's hiatus between my novel Critical Condition and my forthcoming one, Fatal Trauma. To remind people I'm still around, I wrote and self-published Rx Murder. Responses to the work have been good, and I'm pleased.

My Review…

I was honored to have the opportunity to interview Dr. Mabry in September, 2014. We discussed a number of things, including this novella and his May, 2015 (traditionally published) novel, Fatal Trauma. In addition to my review, I'm posting the interview link below.

About Richard L. Mabry, M.D. …

I'm a retired physician who got into non-medical writing after the death of my first wife with my book, The Tender Scar: Life After the Death of a Spouse. I'm gratified that it continues to help those who have lost a loved one.

From that point, I moved into writing fiction. Thus far I've had seven novels of medical suspense published.Code Blue, Medical Error, Diagnosis Death, and Lethal Remedy were the first four. The second and third books listed were named finalists for the ACFW Carol Award and Romantic Times' Best Inspirational Novel respectively, and Lethal Remedy won the Selah Award.

Then came Stress Test (also a finalist for Romantic Times' Best Inspirational Novel). My next book, released in October, 2013 by Thomas Nelson Publishers, was Heart Failure. The most recent is Critical Condition, which was released in April, 2014.

I'm pleased to announce that Fatal Trauma was published on May 19, 2015, with more to follow. Further, I've just self-published a Christian fiction novella, RxMurder, which is currently available.

I am a past Vice President of the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and a proud member of the International Thriller Writers and the International Crime Writers Association.

When I'm not writing, I'm busy being a husband and grandfather, working on my golf game, and doing the hundred-and-one other things that retired people do. I'm busier now than I ever was while in practice — and loving it.
