Thunder boomed and rattled the windows. Tara jumped—she hated storms. “I don’t

remember the last time we had thunder like that.” She crossed her arms. “Who would abandon a helpless baby on a day like today?” Tara looked down at the infant and her heart melted. She squatted and unhooked the safety restraint. “How long was the power out?”

“Thirty minutes tops. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Nancy moved around her desk and powered on her computer. “I’ll pull up the security footage while I get my mom on the phone.”

Nancy’s mother was the local sheriff, so it made sense that she would call her directly rather than 911. “And I’ll see if she needs a diaper change. Do you think she’s hungry?”

Nancy shrugged. She had her phone to her ear.

Tara lifted the light-as-a-feather baby from the carrier and cradled her. “Shh. It’s going to be okay.” 

The baby quieted and snuggled against her. Her heart melted. Sudden tears burned her eyes. She blinked them away.

Tara knew little about babies, but how hard could changing a diaper be? She peaked inside the diaper bag and spotted an envelope. “What do we have here?” She reached for it then drew out the single sheet of paper.

“This is Amelia. She’s a week old. I wish I could keep her but my circumstances won’t allow it. Please love her for me and take good care of her.” Clearly her mom cared deeply for her so why leave her baby at the library?

“You kidnapped my business partner.”

Vic crossed his arms. “You do business with car thieves?”

“What? No. She sells tea. As bad as that may be, it’s hardly criminal.”

Metal smashed, glass cracked, and a taillight burst from the corner of Vic's vehicle. An ugly brown boot took its place.

“Tandy?” The muffled voice sounded like Marissa’s, but that couldn’t be her foot in the ugly brown boot.

“Oh fantastic.” Vic pointed the direction of the mess. “I caught her trying to steal a Jeep, and I made a citizen’s arrest to help the police. I didn’t realize she’d damage my car.”

What had Vic expected? He certainly couldn’t expect Tandy to believe his excuse. “She owns a Jeep. Maybe she got locked out and had to break in.” Tandy raised her voice so Marissa could hear. “Marissa, did you lock your keys in the Jeep again?”

The boot disappeared, and part of Marissa’s face filled the hole. “No!” Her response came with enough force that Tandy was a little scared of releasing her from the trunk.

Tandy shook her head at Vic. “There has to be a logical explanation for why she was breaking into a Jeep. You should have at least asked her what was going on rather than resort to kidnapping. That’s not how you make a citizen’s arrest.”

“Police lock criminals in the back of their cars. I was doing the same.” Vic lifted a shoulder, as if no responsibility rested there. “As soon as I let her out, you’ll see that she wasn’t using a coat hanger to get into her own vehicle. She has what’s known as a Relay Attack Unit designed to unlock cars without a key. Only a car thief would own such a thing.”

He waited until the little thief had almost reached him, then he jumped out and planted a hand on the kid’s chest, driving him up against the wall and holding him there with his forearm. “Give it back.”

The guy’s eyes were hard as flint. “I don’t think so.” He shoved against Daniel’s arm, but Daniel held him firmly in place.

With his free hand, he pushed back his jacket, far enough so the kid could see both his badge and the gun strapped across his chest, but no one else could. “Want to re-think that?”

If possible, the kid’s eyes grew harder. “Whatever.” He shoved the bag against Daniel’s stomach.

Daniel contemplated him as he took the bag. If the little criminal had seemed even the tiniest bit remorseful, he’d let him go without a qualm. Since he didn’t appear to be, Daniel would like nothing better than to arrest him and let him spend a night behind bars to cool off. Unfortunately, if he slapped cuffs on the guy in front of Nicole, the game would be up. It went against everything in him, but if he had to let a petty thief go in order to capture a much bigger prey, so be it.

August in the Missouri Ozarks…where humidity-laden air hangs heavy over these majestic hills and hollows, and time idles by easily, yet, with ordained precision of the Master’s hand.

“This isn’t a home I’d normally show you, Miss Winthrop.” Jerry Marshall removed his sunglasses and motioned toward the two-and-a-half story treasure. “The Ramsey place is a real beaut, of course, but five-thousand square feet is certainly more room than you’ll ever need. Still, you did ask to take a look.”

Charla cupped a palm above her eyes and blinked against the mid-afternoon sun. “Yes, I did.” Except the print-out didn’t do the house justice. It didn’t fully capture the charm. The nostalgia. The magnetic appeal that drew goosebumps. It didn’t convey the feeling the Ramsey home evoked—one of overwhelming love and longing. She stepped closer and gazed upward at the towering structure. “Details, Mr. Marshall?”

“Well,” her real estate agent paused. “Do you think—I mean, would it be…presumptuous of me to suggest we be on a first name basis? After all, we’ve known each other for a month now. Around here, formalities don’t hold water. In Ruby, we’re all friends.”

Charla shifted her gaze for a moment and smiled. “You’re right. First names, it is.”

“Great. Now about those details—this is a solid-built home, circa 1944. Excellent condition. Original woodwork, cedar closets. New heating and air, new roof, plumbing, and additional updates while preserving the home’s integrity. There’s an in-ground storm cellar out back, as well as a garden shed and a small garage. As the fact sheet indicates, it comes with a homeowner’s warranty. There’s a nice rolling meadow and fifteen wooded acres.” Jerry cleared his throat then and presented the asking price. “Now, there are some dandy places we haven’t even seen yet. Why don’t I show you a few of those, Charla? A number that are better suited to your…uh…needs, and more modestly priced?”

It should have irked her that he thought her both incapable and out of touch, but he was so sincere and likeable, Charla couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m single, Jerry, not incapacitated. And with a price tag like that, I bet the owner is willing to negotiate, right?”

“Well, a bit, I imagine. But still—we’re talking a whole lot of money here. Are you sure you still want to see the place?”

“I appreciate your concern, but what part of fat commission do you find distasteful?”

It was her agent’s turn to laugh. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to patronize.” He extended an arm with a grand flourish. “Shall we, then?”

“Absolutely.” She moved past him, excitement drumming in her veins. Drawn by an invisible force that mystified her, Charla hurried up the painted steps and waited for Jerry on the massive front porch. She needn’t look any further. This was it. This was the house. Even the imaginary scent of chocolate chip cookies confirmed it. “I can’t believe this home is still on the market.”

“Yes, well, Edwin’s waited a while for the right buyer.” Jerry met her at the door and inserted a key in the lockbox. “Said the good Lord would send that person when the time was right.”

He swung open the door and Charla’s world tilted. The time was definitely right. She hoped Edwin Ramsey was free to meet soon.

"Porch Swing Girl" by Taylor Bennett

The story behind the story...

I had absolutely no idea what I was doing one chilly February morning when I woke up with a yearning to write in my heart and a book title in my head. I’d been in a creative slump for months, bouncing between story ideas like a ping-pong ball and struggling to find an idea that felt like “The One.”

And then it happened: Porch Swing Girl.

Those words—a book title, I decided—were suddenly just … there. And they were begging me to make a story out of them.

So I did.

I took a walk in the brisk, cool air and pondered the words—when I heard them in my head, they had a sad sort of sound to them, a touch of wistfulness. I decided that this girl on the porch—my main character, whoever she was—must have recently gone through something terrible. Tragic. And she’d found solace while sitting on the porch swing. Or maybe she hadn’t. Not yet.

By the time my walk was over, I had a solid idea of how to begin my book.

But that wasn’t the end of it. No, not by a long shot. I was a fairly new, unseasoned writer when I started writing Porch Swing Girl. In fact, I’d only completed one half-baked attempt at a novel, several years ago.

Getting Porch Swing Girl ready for publication was an incredibly eye-opening experience for me. I was so new to the writing world that I struggled with the practicalities of plot for months before finally creating a book with enough tension in it to get a publisher interested.

And then, miracle of miracles, I was offered a contract with my dream publisher, a small press called Mountain Brook Ink. And they didn’t just want Porch Swing Girl. No, they wanted two more books that would round it out into a complete trilogy.

And now, I am incredibly thrilled to be able to introduce you to Book One of my trilogy: Porch Swing Girl.
