EXCERPT

The hair on Kara Nelson’s neck prickled as she sat behind the wheel of her car parked near the Miami Beach Marina. Something wasn’t right. If she’d been made...She flung the door open and ran.

A boom sounded, and heat stung her back. Running full speed, Kara tripped and flew through the air, hitting the pavement hard. Her hands smacked the ground first, and she flipped, her legs whipping over her head. She lay face up in the parking lot. Searing pain tore through her wrists, arms, shoulders, and neck.

A second explosion sent a ball of fire into the mid-morning air. Kara covered her head as debris smacked the ground around her. She lifted her head with effort, first looking at her dismantled undercover car then back at the marina. Drug lord, Luis Alvarado’s yacht had moved out to sea and with it, her chances of wrapping up a year-long investigation. Where had the second blast come from? She struggled to sit up. Then the world went black.

Takeover Thursday with Robin Caroll

Robin is here to share a bit about her latest release. She's offered to give away an electronic copy of the first or second book in the series (winner's choice). You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends April 11, 2019. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you.)

The story behind the story...

New Orleans, Louisiana. Home of Mardi Gras and Krewes. The Big Easy. Where the history is rich with Cajuns and Creoles, voodoo and hoodoo, bayous and food that is slap-your-momma-good. I love this city so much, always have, as a Louisiana girl myself. Does the city have some darkness in its past? Oh, but yes, but it also has some of the coolest people you’ll ever meet. That’s why I knew I wanted my setting to be New Orleans when I started planning my most recent series, the Darkwater Inn.

I already knew much of what I needed to know about the area and the people, having been there many times in my life (hey, I even marched in one of the Mardi Gras parades with my high school pep squad). However, I hadn’t been to the Big Easy since Hurricane Katrina and the massive rebuilding. So I knew I had to make a visit to research and see what had changed…and what had stayed true to the essence of New Orleans. There is just something almost magical about New Orleans in and of itself. It’s more than just a city, it’s a living, breathing…character.

The sense of homecoming as I walked the residential areas of New Orleans, or as we rode all three lines of the streetcars (which are NOT trolleys, by the way):  St. Charles, Canal Street, and the Riverfront, was almost overwhelming. I snapped pictures of everything and anything, wanting to capture as much of the spirit of the city as possible. I keep a daily journal, and during the weekend my fellow author friend and I spent there, I memorialized everything I heard, smelled, and ate every day.

When I sat down to write the first book in the series, Darkwater Secrets, I pulled up many of these photos and memories. Ah, the food. There were so many delectable morsels that I wanted to share with the readers, so many of the meals made it into the book. Because of feedback from readers, I was able to publish a companion recipe book for the series, sharing some of my family and friends’ recipes.

As I wrote the second book, Darkwater Lies, I pulled in more of the gritty underbelly of the city I love so much. Capturing the feeling of the carnival season was important, as I wanted to share the magic of Mardi Gras with readers. Many have never been to a parade, much less the craziness of the Mardi Gras Krewe parades, so I wanted to bring that life for the reader.

But as I started the third book, Darkwater Truth (available June 1st) my research took a totally new turn. I began envisioning a tie between the true past of New Orleans with my fictional present. The pictures I’d taken years ago? Well, one of them is a MAIN feature in the actual historical part of the city that I was able to use. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited writing and finishing Darkwater Truth was for me, and I hope it keeps readers on the edge of their seats, not knowing fact from fiction, but being surprised by the connections where the past and present collide.

And, of course, readers will finally know who Adelaide chooses—Beau or Dimitri. But you’ll have to read the books to find out.

"Never Let Go" by Elizabeth Goddard ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Elizabeth's publisher has offered to give away TWO (2) print copies of the book (US ONLY).  You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends February 8, 2019. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you.)

Q & A with Elizabeth...

Q:  This is the first book in the "Uncommon Justice" series. How many books are proposed for the series, and when will the next one release?
A:  I'm so glad you asked! Three books have been proposed, and the second book is slated to release in Fall 2019.

Q:  What was the inspiration behind Never Let Go?
A:  I read an article about a forensic genealogist and the missing persons case she solved for the police. It intrigued me enough that I saved it, hoping I'd have a chance to use this particular kind of character in a story. Add to that, I grew up in a family of genealogists. Setting always serves as an inspiration for me as well, and I had hoped to set a series in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Q:  What do you hope readers gain from reading this book?
A:  My goal is always to deliver a powerful emotional experience, but more than that, I hope readers take away a sense of satisfaction as well as the feeling that all is right with the world when justice is served, relationships are mended, and romance is delivered.

Q:  What's next on your writing to-do list?
A:  I'm currently working on book two in the "Uncommon Justice" series.

Thanks so much for stopping by my blog. I'm sure my readers will enjoy learning a bit more about your latest release.

My review...

After Willow Anderson’s grandfather dies, she is determined to close out the forensic genealogist case he’d been working on before he’d died. It’s a cold case of a baby abduction twenty years ago. While working on the case, Willow learns that her ex-fiancé Austin was helping her grandfather. Austin broke her heart when he left her, but she must find a way to work with him to solve the mystery of the missing baby. In doing so, they’ll need to confront their past, as well as stay alive. Someone wants to prevent them from finding out the truth. What lengths will they go to in order to keep Willow and Austin from uncovering the mystery?

Romantic suspense stories are some of my favorite books. The prologue grabs the readers’ interest. There are a few parts in the story where the pacing stalls with a bit too much backstory, but things balance out as the story unfolds.  The characters remind the reader that things aren't always as they seem, and it's easy to root for Austin as he battles his demons. The genealogy angle is a nice addition to story. The romance is woven in, but it doesn’t overwhelm the suspense. It’s the first in Goddard’s “Uncommon Justice” series. I look forward to seeing the characters, particularly Heath, in future installments.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.

"Secret Past" by Sharee Stover ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Sharee is here to share a bit about her latest release, Secret Past.  She publisher has offered to give away a hard copy of the book (U.S. ONLY) or an electronic copy (outside the U.S.).  You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends November 2 , 2018. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you.)  Here's Melanie...

Leslie, thank you for having me here today. I am so excited to share the development of Secret Past, my debut novel with Love Inspired Suspense. The story is currently a stand alone, but I’ll admit, I love Katie and Daniel, so they might just pop up somewhere else someday! Stay tuned!

The book focuses on Katie Tribani’s façade of a life. As the story opens, Katie is dealing with the loss of her mother. She doesn’t get time to grieve before she’s thrust into the protection of US Marshal Daniel Knight. He warns her that the father and brother she’s never known have discovered her location and they’re coming for her.

Every reality in Katie’s life tumbles down as Daniel whisks her away to safety. Katie has no one left to verify Daniel’s story, and this stranger is her only hope of uncovering the truth before her family kills her.

Katie’s in for a series of surprises and must decipher who is telling the truth.

The US Marshal’s Witness Protection Program is quite fascinating and has an interesting history. I wanted to write a story that showed how instrumental the US Marshals are in the protection of those witnesses. Although I’d read several books with characters in that predicament, I needed more facts. That sent me on a research journey which can be dangerous, because for me, I start out Googling one topic, and before you know it, I’m all over the place. Occasionally, I end up on Pinterest and DIY projects which have absolutely nothing to do with my research, but it’s fun. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case in this particular story. I wanted facts, and what better way to find those than to start with the program itself?

I found great information right on the US Marshals website including the fact that the program has been around since the early 1970s. I also searched pictures, movies, and books, and somewhere along the line, I came upon a black and white picture of a child with his mom in a story about the program. That’s when I started to play “what if.”

What if my heroine was placed in the program as a child and grew up always under protection? If that was normal, if her family didn’t want her to know the truth … as an adult, how would that effect a person? When is a good time for a parent to tell their child the truth? And that posed my target question: What if you’d been raised in witness protection and never known it?

From there, Katie developed into a strong, intelligent, green-eyed beauty who’s determined to find the truth about herself.

The funny thing is, I had been watching a lot of the show, Quantico at the time I was writing Secret Past, and Katie and Daniel both took on the physical attributes from two of Quantico’s characters.

Research doesn’t happen just at the beginning of the book. It occurs all the way through and sometimes long before the story is ever conceived. Such is the case with this novel. Nearly two years before the conception of Secret Past, I’d gone hiking with a friend in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and she recommended we do the Manitou Incline. I can honestly say that was one of the toughest, most rewarding adventures of my life. Strangely, halfway up, an idea for a shootout scene came to mind, and it easily worked its way into Katie and Daniel’s experience.

I also work to ensure my scenes are accurate, so my law-enforcement husband has endured some creative research, too, including me tying him to a chair to see if he could escape.

That’s the messy history of Secret Past. For those who haven’t read it, I hope you’ll get a copy and enjoy Katie and Daniel’s journey. Thanks again, Leslie, for having me on your blog!

Thanks for stopping by, Sharee, and sharing the "story behind the story." I'm sure my readers will enjoy learning how Katie and Daniel's story came to life.

(I rated it 4/5 stars.)

From Betrayed by Dee Henderson

Good people committed murder. Paul had long since accepted that. He’d put a significant number of them in prison. But a good person didn’t often plan the murder in advance, requiring rapid decisions on what to do afterward, leading to mistakes, panic. Janelle had not planned what happened that night. That was what had clicked. Paul leaned back to ponder that thought.
Guilty people gave themselves away—sweating, minds racing, desperate to get rid of the evidence, establish an alibi, spin a story out to friends to cover the time period. Good people who committed murder were unable to walk away and show no signs of it. As an investigator, you didn’t make a decision based on behavior. You worked from the evidence. But the evidence backed up behavior. He had two people in this case file, and they were handling events very differently.
He accepted the bowl of ice cream from his wife, waited till she was seated. “Ann, your best evidence that Tanya—or someone else—did this murder is Janelle’s behavior. The patrol officer found Janelle at home wearing sweats, eating chocolate ice cream out of the carton, and methodically taking apart a scrapbook full of pictures of her with Andrew. The search of her home yielded some things of Andrew’s: jacket, CDs, and books haphazardly thrown together in a box in the hall. Janelle had been purging her apartment of her boyfriend when the patrol officer knocked on her door.”
He saw the surprise cross her face.
“I hadn’t thought about that specifically.”
“Character tells. It always does. Janelle isn’t guilty of this. The patrol officer knocks on her door, and she’s clueless that her boyfriend has been hurt, let alone is dead. If it was the detective who knocked on her door and saw for himself what she was doing, her shock and the tears, he would have kept pushing until he could find another answer.
“But by the time Janelle has been driven in the back of a squad car to the beach, has seen all the flashing lights and cops and medical examiner vehicles, she’s quiet and wound tight and confused, desperately trying to sort out what happened to the man she loves after she left him. The detective sees someone saying she didn’t do it, but missed seeing the physical innocence, that clueless expression that would have told him she was telling the truth. He knows they had a fight, there’s blood on her shoes, the knife she can’t produce is consistent with what stabbed Andrew—he had to go with what was there in front of him. The detective bought the frame.”
“You believe me?”
“Yes.”
Relief flowed across her face.

EXCERPT

He leaned close to Addy’s ear. “I meant what I said, you do look breathtaking.”
Addy smiled and lowered her chin, the blush spreading across her cheeks visible under the mask.
The music started and groups of people made their way toward the dance floor.
Beau wanted nothing more than to have Addy in his arms again. He stood and made a sweeping bow, then extended his hand to her. “Shall we, milady?”
She took his hand, grinning.
Once he had her in his arms, they swayed in time to the music from the live band. The space on the floor became more crowded, so he pulled her closer to him.

"Always Watching" by Lynette Eason

My Review...

Wade Savage has a thriving career as a psychiatrist and radio host. He also has a stalker who is getting bolder. Unbeknownst to Wade, his father hires a bodyguard from Elite Guardians, Madelyn McKay. When Madeleine is attacked, and almost killed, on duty, her coworker Olivia Edwards takes over. Wade is not thrilled to have a bodyguard, but he accepts it after he is attacked, which is a huge step up from the weird gifts and hang-ups which had been occurring. Wade stirred things up with the stalker when he announced on air that he had thrown out the gifts. Now, it appears that the stalker will settle for nothing short of his death. As the danger increases, so does Olivia’s attraction to Wade. Will she be able to keep him alive and save her own heart in the process? Is Wade’s stalker a lonely, hurting caller, or is it someone who has outsmarted everyone?  This is the first book in Eason’s new series, “Elite Guardians.” There is more suspense than romance, and the fast pace makes it difficult to put down. The story keeps you guessing right up to the end because just when you think you have it figured out, Eason throws a curveball!

My Review...

After the mysterious death of her father, Mallory Davis returned home to Mermaid Point, a place she left fifteen years ago. After seeing her dad’s new boat, she knows there is more to his death than she was led to believe, as his finances would not allow such an extravagant purchase. She feels he was murdered. Game warden Kevin O’Connor tends to agree with her assessment, but he is leery to trust her again after she broke his heart years ago. Together, they hope to arrange the puzzle pieces surrounding the death. But first, Mallory must stay alive. With his last breath, Mallory’s father left her with some cryptic information which leads her to try and track down her birth parents. Mallory thinks she is being watched, though she cannot imagine who would be after her or why she and her daughter are being threatened. Could everything somehow be related to her adoption? Will she be successful in tracking down her biological parents? Are they connected as well?

This book is second in Coble’s “Sunset Cove” series, but it could be read as a standalone. It is chock full of drama and mystery. The suspense is well executed and keeps the reader guessing throughout, and there are some surprise twists along the way. Key themes include second chances and forgiveness, especially of oneself. Coble is an excellent storyteller, and her latest does not disappoint!

The central theme of Foul Play is the resilience of God’s people. I am in awe of those who cope with immense tragedy in their lives by digging deep, persevering, and never giving up. God does not always provide an easy path for us. Oftentimes it is crooked and tortuous.  Ex-SEAL, Cole Strachan, has not only lost his baby son to SIDS but his wife has divorced him, he suffers from flashbacks to a terrorist attack at a school in Afghanistan, and his faith in God hangs by a thread. Yet despite his personal struggles, he is able to summon up the grit and determination he needs to protect his old high school sweetheart from a malicious and anonymous attacker at the hospital where she works. The mark of a true hero is someone able to ignore his own personal suffering to focus on doing kind deeds for others. How could any woman not fall in love with a man like that?

Once I had created the character of Cole, the rest of the story kind of wrote itself. I rarely think ahead or make detailed plans when writing. I write by intuition.  The medical plot line took a little tweaking, altering, and researching before I was totally happy with it, but I can’t say too much about this, as I might give some vital clue away.  I mainly enjoyed pushing my characters to the edge of their emotional capabilities and then throwing them a lifeline, allowing their faith to both soar and plummet as the story unfolds. After all, isn’t this how faith works in real life too?

Foul Play is only my third published book, and I feel myself growing in confidence and enjoyment with each one I write. I am humbled that I have been given this opportunity to write Christian romance, and every day I remind myself never to take it for granted.
