The story behind the story...

When my Lakeside series was coming to an end, I really loved the fictional town of Shelby Lake that I had created and wasn't ready to leave behind. However, I needed a fresh series based in that area. I was inspired by my childhood of growing up down the road from my grandparents' dairy farm and their lives as farmers. Also, I'm so blessed by their spiritual legacy. So I created the Holland family--a family of dairy farmers who need to find hope in the heartache. I wanted to honor farmers, who are the backbones of America. While I was doing some research, I learned about a program that helps veterans with disabilities to learn how to farm in order to start their own small businesses. As a former Marine, wife, I've always had a heart for our military. In Season of Hope, Jake wants to create a fatigues-to-farming program that will help veterans with disabilities to learn how to start their own farms. And with that idea, I needed to give him obstacles, and the plot was born.

As far back as Emily Hayes could remember, her heart yearned for a sister. She directed her earliest requests to Santa Claus, which made Christmas mornings a confusing blend of excitement and disenchantment. Later she bargained with God. He disappointed her too. When she learned where babies came from, she petitioned her mom with promises to keep her room clean and be the best sister in the whole-wide world. Nothing worked. At some point the pleas stopped, but the lingering desire left a hole in her heart.

Thursday morning, she stepped outside the white-columned-home converted to a hospital and traced her ultrasound image with her finger. It wasn’t at all what she’d expected. "Fit to by Tied" by Debby Mayne

My review...

I fell in love with the Bucklin family in High Cotton, so I was really excited to have the chance to review the sequel … and I still love this family!

It’s time for the “yearly” family reunion (though they seem to occur far more frequently, to the dismay of some family members). The explosive events (literally) from last year are still fresh in the minds of many. As a result, Brett doesn’t want to go, but that’s not an option. He tries to steer clear of Julian to avoid any further trouble, especially as Julian seems to get away with everything. But, trouble seems to find Brett anyway. Since Julian’s parents came into money, he lives a privileged life, and his mother, Marybeth, has had just about enough, and she realizes that money doesn’t buy everything. Unfortunately, her husband, Bucky, doesn’t see a problem and is happy with their life.

Thanks to Puddin’ and Shay and their new clothing shop, Coralee has revamped her wardrobe and look and is now attracting all kinds of attention on campus.  Unfortunately, she learns that it may not give her the relationship she deserves.

Twins Sally and Sara are dealing with a lot of changes, starting with the fact that Sally may be moving out of the condo she shares with Sara and her husband. A new relationship throws Sally another curveball. Their mother Sheila can’t help but worry as she sees them growing up and going more in separate directions.

As with the first book, Mayne shows that family can be complicated, to say the least. I like how the title is woven throughout the story. Chapters alternate between characters so the reader gets to see things from just about everyone’s perspective. Some things wrap up a bit too neatly, with minimal drama, which is a bit different than the first book. Food is mentioned a lot in this book (as it’s a key focus at reunions!), so recipes would’ve been a nice addition. Perhaps Mayne will consider that for future books. Overall, if you’re looking for an enjoyable, light read, this is one to check out.

"High Cotton" by Debby Mayne

My review...

It’s time for the Bucklin family reunion … again. They have more in a year than many people have in five years. Shay Henke likes to see her family, but she could do without all the associated drama. In fact, the drama has already begun, from trying to keep her sister-in-law’s secret, to trying to help out her twin cousins with their business and real estate ventures, and, finally, being the only one without a significant other to take to the reunion. However, the latter changes when her high school crush returns to town and agrees to go with her. His attendance will certainly raise eyebrows at the reunion. But, that’s par for the course in the Bucklin family. Shay sums it all up quite nicely: “When someone mentions family, I think of unconditional love, hearth, home, and all things safe and wonderful. That is, until the word ‘reunion’ is added to it.”

Let me start by saying I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this book, starting with the cover. Mayne’s latest is Southern women’s fiction at its finest! There is great characterization, with a little bit of something for everyone in the cast; single, married, newlyweds, parents, and all-around loveable. Rich dialogue combines with realistic family drama and dynamics and small-town (even a bit of redneck) charm to create a story that will stay with you after the final page (which comes way too soon!). The only thing that could have made this book any better would have been a section for the recipes mentioned throughout 😊 Thankfully, this is the first book in the “Bucklin Family Reunion” series, and I can’t wait for the next installment!

"Missing Isaac" by Valerie Fraser Luesse

My review...

This book wasn’t quite what I was expecting. I found the title to be a bit misleading. I expected there to be a much larger focus on Isaac and his disappearance. However, the focus seemed to be centered a bit more on Pete and Dovey. Things did come together, for the most part, as the story went on.

The book takes place in Alabama in the 1960s, and it deals with subjects such as segregation and Christianity. While there is not a deep biblical element, it is woven throughout the story. There are a number of characters, which made it a bit hard to follow at times, and it took quite a few chapters for me to get into the story line. The dialogue is realistic, and the setting is nicely detailed. This is the debut book by the author. I did enjoy the writing style, so I would likely check out future books.
