Annie stepped into the coolness of the house.
Though it was September, the temperatures had remained warm, and the cool living
room was a relief after her bike ride from town. Her father and Levi Lapp were
in the kitchen, which would work perfectly. She straightened her apron, made
sure her kapp
wasn’t askew and walked into the kitchen as if she had no idea she was interrupting.
She aimed for a casual stride but stumbled when
she spied the man in a cowboy hat. A cowboy hat? She shook her head as if that
would clear up what she was seeing.
“Annie. I’m glad you’re home. I want you to meet
Levi…Levi Lapp.”
“Hello.”
Levi tipped the cowboy hat, revealing blond hair
that curled at his collar. “Howdy, ma’am.”
Howdy, ma’am?
Had she fallen asleep and landed in a Western? “I’m
Annie.”
“It’s nice to meet you.”
“And you, as well. I was just fetching two glasses
of lemonade. Don’t let me interrupt…”
“Levi’s from Pennsylvania—the Lancaster Plain
community.”
“Ya? I imagine
it’s cooler there.” She didn’t care about the weather in Pennsylvania, but she
couldn’t exactly ask about the hat.
“It was cooler when I left. Now Texas, where I
plan to go, it’s still much warmer. They have days in the 80s right through
November.”
“Texas?” Annie had pulled two glasses from the
cabinet. At the mention of Texas she turned toward Levi, holding the glasses
and trying to remember what she was going to do with them.
He wasn’t ugly exactly, only odd looking because of
the hat. He seemed to be tall and on the thin side, had a healthy tan and broad
shoulders. His blue eyes twinkled as if he understood her confusion and was
enjoying it.

Q: How did your
latest story come to be?
A: Mackenzie
was such a strong Wilder sibling that I wanted to write a match for her who
broke through her tough-girl exterior. Enter Jace Hawke. He’s all the things
she’s not, and she’s never been able to resist him. (Which only makes her more
upset!)
Q: Ha! I bet it does. Which
character in the book is most like you?
A: I’m most
like Mackenzie in trying to be tough and do everything myself. But she’s way
stronger than me. 😊 I’m more of
a wuss than she is!
Q: Who would
play your characters if a movie was made of this book?
A: Drew Van
Acker and Blake Lively
Q: Ooh, good choice. Favorite
line from your book?
A: Loving
someone else isn’t an option. I don’t even like other people half the time. -
Mackenzie
Q: That's a great line! What's the
takeaway you hope readers get from your book?
A: I hope readers
are reminded that we’re much stronger with God than without him.
Q: So true! What can you tell me about your writing process?
A: I love quiet when I write. Time to myself—to get into the process—is the best thing for me. I don’t listen to music, although I know a lot of authors do. I’m more of the hunker down and zone out into the writing type of author. I love it if I can write without distractions!
Q: I'm one of those people who need music in the background 🙂What can you
tell me about your next project?
A: Readers will
“meet” Evan Hawke in this book and hopefully will be pleased to find out that
he’s getting his own story. I recently signed a contract for books 4, 5, and 6
in the Colorado Grooms series, so that’s what I’m working on now.

My review...
Lynn’s latest is the third installment in the “Colorado
Grooms” series, though it could be read as a standalone.
Mackenzie Wilder is not impressed to see the man her brother
hired to help out on their ranch: Jace Hawke, her ex-boyfriend who broke her
heart when he left town—and her—to follow his dream of riding bulls. Will she give
in to those old feelings she still harbors for Jace, or will she let him walk
out of her life again?
Jace needs a job while he’s recovering from an injury, and
the Wilder’s ranch seems like the perfect opportunity, even though Mackenzie’s
attitude toward him makes things a bit challenging. Can he break through her
tough exterior?
This is a sweet, quick read with relatable (flawed but authentic)
characters and scenarios. Mackenzie is a strong, spunky heroine who’s easy to like.
As with most Love Inspired reads, there is some predictability, but that doesn’t
take away from the enjoyment of this story. Themes include trust, faith, and
second chances. Readers of the series will appreciate seeing some familiar
characters, though it’s not necessary to read the first two books in the series
first.
Lynn has a way with words that pulls the reader in. Here are two of my favorite lines that show how Jace has his work cut out for him:
- Whoo-ee. The amount of loathing streaming from Mackenzie was enough to heat the town of Westbend in the dead of winter.
- "If you're trying to thank me, you should probably tone down the jerk and up the doting, adoring admirer."

The story behind the story...
When my Lakeside series was coming to an end, I really loved the fictional town of Shelby Lake that I had created and wasn't ready to leave behind. However, I needed a fresh series based in that area. I was inspired by my childhood of growing up down the road from my grandparents' dairy farm and their lives as farmers. Also, I'm so blessed by their spiritual legacy. So I created the Holland family--a family of dairy farmers who need to find hope in the heartache. I wanted to honor farmers, who are the backbones of America. While I was doing some research, I learned about a program that helps veterans with disabilities to learn how to farm in order to start their own small businesses. As a former Marine, wife, I've always had a heart for our military. In Season of Hope, Jake wants to create a fatigues-to-farming program that will help veterans with disabilities to learn how to start their own farms. And with that idea, I needed to give him obstacles, and the plot was born.

How the story came to be...
When I began writing
this series, Emma quickly became a tender woman who would do just about
anything for anyone. And Gage was so cynical and wounded. I kept thinking, who
could bring healing into his life but sweet, sacrificial Emma? I wanted this
book to be about healing and second chances and growth for both
characters.
My review...
This is the second book in Lynn’s “Colorado Groom” series,
but it can be read as a standalone.
Gage finds himself the unexpected guardian of baby Hudson
after Gage’s friend dies. Gage is sure that there must be someone better suited
to be a father, but he agrees to keep Hudson until that person can be found.
Emma agrees to help him, but she hopes to change Gage’s mind.
While there is a bit of predictability to Love Inspired
stores, Lynn has crafted relatable, well-drawn characters with a few unexpected
elements and wonderful chemistry. Her writing is full of charm and heart, as
well as vivid detailing. It’s easy to root for the characters in this quick
read, which will leave the reader anxiously anticipating Lynn’s next story.

Leslie, for having me today! I’m thrilled to be here and to be able to giveaway
a signed paperback copy of Dangerous
Obsession! This is the last book in my Security Specialists series, though
it can be read as a standalone, and readers will be seeing some cameos from this
special team of protectors in upcoming Love Inspired Suspense novels.
Dangerous Obsession is Wilder Flynn’s story. He’s the team leader
who put this band of soldiers together after his sister died. You meet Wilder
in Final Verdict (the book that this
series hinges on) and gather bits and pieces in the subsequent books, but his
full story is revealed here. The truth is, he just showed up on the pages with
my hero in Final Verdict and had a
certain charm about him as well as a secret…though I wasn’t sure what it was
back then. Wilder isn’t much of a talker which is why it was so much fun to put
him with a heroine whose sole job is to get people to speak. Enter Cosette
LaCroix, a feisty Cajun woman who is the resident psychologist on the team.
By the time I got around to
writing his story, I picked up the pieces he tossed out in the other books and
worked on getting him to reveal to me the rest of his story. When it finally
tumbled out, I was surprised to learn about some of his quirks, his hidden
talents, and the big secret. As far as dealing with Cosette, I enlisted my
sister, Celeste. She’s a therapist and has a lot of experience dealing with
sociopathic behavior as well as traumatized individuals. I knew I wanted a
stalker since it would force Wilder to open up and relive some of his painful
past, and I knew I needed it to relate to someone he cared about … Cosette! But I
like to give readers a fun twist, so I got on the phone one afternoon with my
sister. I took a notebook outside by the pool and planted myself on a lounge
chair, and we began to talk through some scenarios that would be believable and
still fit the Love Inspired Suspense line—which is the heroine and hero must be
in constant danger. So why would a stalker want to immediately threaten their
object of affection? After discussing some ideas and what would be a natural
progression, we had a solid story!
It was so much fun to plot with
my sister, and it gave me a new appreciation for her job. Truly, it’s a gift to
be able to see the kinds of things she does in real life and not curl up in a
ball and check out. I only write about some of the darkness. Also, I should
note, she never broke any confidentiality oaths while we brainstormed.

Q & A with Jill...
Q: Welcome, Jill! Can you tell my readers how your latest story came to be written?
A: Since I live in Colorado, I knew I wanted to write something set in Colorado. I'd already written about ranching in Texas, and I wanted to tweak that, so I ended up imagining a guest ranch. From there, I decided I wanted to have a little girl bring her parents together. I brainstormed. What would cause a mom to tell her ex he had a daughter he'd never met? I ended up using the little girl's medical condition as a catalyst, and that's how the story began.
Q: Thanks! Definitely a good way to start a story. Do you have any specific rituals you must have or do when writing?
A: I actually love silence when I write. I know a lot of people listen to music, but that's a distraction for me. I love a quiet space, and I write best in the afternoon. In the morning, I must have my coffee! And bacon. I consider bacon writing fuel. Comfort is also important. If I can write in my pajamas, it's a good day.
Q: I love it! I know a number of writers who love bacon, so you are obviously correct on the writing fuel. I'm one of those people who have to have noise or music in the background. Along the writing lines ... what writers have inspired you?
A: Oh! That's a great question. Any good writing is inspiring, but I'll list a few of my favorites. Denise Hunter, Becky Wade, and Kristan Higgins. I love writing that infuses humor into it :)
Q: Those are some wonderful choices. What advice do you have for new authors?
A: Try not to get overly bogged down with social media. Yes, it's important to build a platform, but allowing yourself to imagine and write and re-write is what improves your craft. Also: read, read, read. It helps to dive into another story and see what the author is doing well ... or maybe not so well. It's a great way to learn what works and what doesn't.
Q: Great advice! What can you tell us about your next project?
A: My next book, The Rancher's Unexpected Baby, is due out in early 2019. I'm excited for this story. It will feature one of the Wilder siblings, and it's about second chances and believing you're worthy of being loved.

An excerpt...
Only Cate good question the motives behind a brownie. "Just come on." He snagged her arm, directing her. If he waited for her to decide, they'd be here all day. His hand felt right at home against her skin, but he ignored the increased rhythm in his chest at being near her. She smelled like flowers and good pieces of the past.
Luc matched his longer stride to Cate's shorter one. He probably had close to half a foot on her in height, but she made up for in spunk. Case in point: she shook his hand off her arm like she was dealing with insect and set of a man. His mouth twitched. As long as she kept walking, he wouldn't fight her.
What was it about Cate that both infuriated him and intrigued him at the same time? Just her presence wrecked havoc on him. He wanted to tuck into her and take a good long breath, as if he'd been holding his for the years during their separation and his lungs could finally function again. But he wasn't allowed those kinds of liberties anymore, and he wouldn't take them if he could.
He and Cate had bigger thing to focus on than their wayward relationship. Like their daughter. Which was exactly what he wanted to talk to her about.
"Joe made brownies. I could smell them when I was in my office earlier. They're amazing right out of the oven."
Her sideways glance included more narrowing of those caramel eyes. "Are you trying to bribe me into a conversation with the promise of a brownie, Luc Wilder?"
"Yes, ma'am. That's exactly what I'm doing."
My review...
Luc Wilder is shockeed to see his ex-girlfriend Cate back in town (and specifically at his guest ranch) ... with a three-year old she claims is his daughter. Ruby has a health issue, and Cate felt it only right that Luc has a chance to know Ruby. He can't help but love the little girl, but will Luc and Cate be able to forgive and forget the past and learn to trust each other again?
This is the first installment in the "Colorado Grooms" series. The hero and heroine are well-developed and relatable in their issues (lots of emotional baggage on both sides). The secondary characters are perfectly integrated, and the reader may be left hoping some of them (particularly Mackenzie and Gage) are seen again in future books. Themes of forgiveness, grace, trust, and second chances are key. The religious message is woven throughout this sweet tale ... and the author even throws in a nice surprise at the end :)

"Reuniting with the Bull Rider" by Jill Kemerer ... and a GIVEAWAY!

you for having me, Leslie! I’m very excited Reunited
with the Bull Rider is finally in stores. It’s the second book in my
Wyoming Cowboys series, and it’s dear to my heart.
I
got the idea for it while walking one day. I live near bike trails and a river,
so I try to get outside whenever the weather is nice. Anyway, my mind wandered
toward this fictional couple who had been madly in love a decade ago, and then
the guy just left town without a word. What a jerk!
But
as I made my way back home I realized that the hero isn’t really a jerk. As I
thought about him, my heart broke for him. Then the premise of the book hit me.
What if the heroine was asked to mentor a little girl only to realize it was
her ex’s child?
I
know I would have handled a situation like that badly! I had to write their
story. Naturally, things aren’t what they seem. All three main characters,
Nash, Amy, and Ruby, are forced to deal with past pain, and I hope readers enjoy
their story.
(I rated it 4/5 stars.)

Love Inspired Blog Tour
Feel comforted and at peace when you read these uplifting romances of faith, forgiveness and hope from Love Inspired. There are twelve new books each month: six from Love Inspired for those who love contemporary romance and six from Love Inspired Suspense for those who like some danger with their romance stories.
My review of Primary Suspect by Laura Scott:
Widowed ER nurse Dana Petrie meets Mitch Callahan, a
fire investigator, after he’s attacked at t a crime scene. He believes someone
is setting him up for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, but Dana believes in his
innocence. Unfortunately, that belief has now placed her in danger, too. Is it
possible that her former husband’s family could be connected to a string of
warehouse fires? And who hates Mitch enough to set him up for murder?
Scott’s latest is the fifth installment of her
“Callahan Confidential” series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. The
pace is active throughout, and the action stays steady, so it holds the
reader’s attention. There is a nice mix of mystery/romance, so the romance
doesn’t dominate the story. A few things tie up a bit too quickly, but,
overall, this is a nice addition to the series. The cover is a great fit, as
well.

My review of The Wedding Quilt Bride by Marta Perry:
After the death of her husband James, Rebecca Mast
returns home to her Amish community with her six-year-old son Elijah, “Lige,”
in tow. It doesn’t take long for her childhood friend Daniel King to realize
that she’s not the same person she was a few years ago. It’s apparent that
something happened to while she was gone, but he’s not quite sure what. Lige is
withdrawn, especially around strangers. He wants to help her get settled, along
with helping her set up her quilt shop, but Rebecca is independent and wants to
do it on her own. Can she come to realize that it’s okay to accept help and
trust another man?
It’s easy to connect with the characters in this book
where love, faith, healing, and redemption are key themes. It’s the second book
in the “Brides of Lost Creek” series, but it can easily be read as a
standalone. Perry has a way of adding realism to her stories. Some parts are a
bit predictable, but this is still a quick, enjoyable read with a satisfying
ending.

When I was given the assignment to write a book with the
title “Secret Christmas Twins,” I’ll admit, I was concerned. Secret baby
stories are very common in romance fiction, and they usually involve a single
mom returning to her hometown with a baby or young child who turns out to be
the hero’s. But that storyline doesn’t work so well in Christian romance, where
the characters usually stay chaste until marriage.
So I had to get a little more creative with my secret baby
story. The secret Christmas twins actually belong to the hero’s sister, who’s
made many mistakes she’s ashamed of. She doesn’t want her family back at home
to know that she had twins out of wedlock, and she fears that if they find out
about her boys, they’ll attempt to take custody… especially her brother Jason,
who’s just a little bit, shall we say, rigid.
For a variety of reasons, she gives her babies to her friend to raise at
the family farm she’s part owner of, swearing her friend to secrecy about the
babies’ parentage.
You can imagine the tension when the hero turns out to be
staying for Christmas at that very family farm where the heroine has taken the
babies…
So there’s a serious secret underlying this story. But there
are also sleigh rides and Christmas decorations and a dog named Mistletoe! I
loved writing this book, and I hope you’ll love reading it.
My review...
Erica Lindholm and twin boys Mikey and Teddy are headed to
Holly Creek Farm. Things seem to be going well until she encounters the one
person she had hoped not to see, the twins’ uncle, Jason Stephanidis. Jason
knows that there is something Erica is not telling him and his family, and as a
detective, he is determined to find out what that is. If he learns the truth,
it could change everything for everybody. Will Erica receive a holiday miracle
or a holiday disaster?
If you’re looking for a quick read to get you in the holiday
spirit, this book fits the bill, starting with the adorable cover. There is a
solid cast of supporting characters, and they are realistic in their struggles
with trust and forgiveness. The storyline makes it easy to see God’s work at
hand. The author’s writing style is smooth, and plot points blend together
nicely to create a satisfying ending.
