One of the
really nice things about the office is that it’s an old farmhouse. Mrs. Baron
stocks it with just about everything because, like all southern girls, she
likes to be prepared.
Warmed from
the shower and in sweats, I drink my tea. Bennett sits at the table with me,
while Mrs. Baron hums in the background. She’s throwing something together for
us to eat while we wait out the storm.
“Well,
Watermelon Queen, was your first day all you expected it to be?” Bennett asks.
“Let’s just
say it was more than I planned for,” I dryly reply.
Bennett
laughs.
“This is
going to be a fun year. I’ve always wanted a little sister, and now I have
one,” he says.
