First Line Friday

Happy Friday! It's time for First Line Friday, hosted by Hoarding Books.

It's time to grab the book nearest to you and leave a comment with the first line. Today on First Line Friday, I'm featuring the latest release from The Crow's Call by Wanda E. Brunstetter.

And the first line is ...

An April wind's flurry sent swirls of dust into the air and across the yard.

About the book...

When Vernon King, his son, and son-in-law are involved in a terrible accident, three women are left to cope with their deaths, as they become the sole providers of the family they have left. The women's only income must come from the family greenhouse, but someone seems to be trying to force them out of business.

Amy King has just lost her father and brother, and her mother needs her to help run the family's greenhouse. It doesn't seem fair to ask her to leave a job she loves when there is still a sister and brother to help. But Sylvia is also grieving for her husband while left to raise two children, and Henry, just out of school, is saddled with all the jobs his father and older brother used to do. As Amy assumes her new role, she also asks Jared Riehl to put their courtship on hold. When things become even more stressful at the greenhouse, will Amy crumble under the pressure?

EXCERPT

A Doubt or Two

“You said you were both in church.” Molly said. “Did it ever make you doubt? At all? That God would put you through something like this?”
Russell shook his head. “Why should I doubt God?”
“You’ve met my family. They’d make Jesus doubt faith was worth it.”
He scowled. “No. God may allow evil to exist, but he doesn’t condone it. He helps you get through it, deal with it.”
“I’m not so sure.”
He hesitated, looking at the house with a deep sadness in his eyes. “I do sometimes wonder why he doesn’t always give us enough strength.”
Molly put a hand on his arm, her voice softening. “It’s not about strength. You couldn’t have stopped it.”
His eyes narrowed in puzzlement as he studied her again.
“You couldn’t have stopped her from being a hoarder.”
His voice dropped almost an octave. “I’m not so sure.”
“You know my family. You knew Liz. She spent most of her life trying to be the peacemaker. Taking in everyone’s stuff is a logical outcome.”
He shrugged, as though unconvinced. Molly squeezed his arm, then released it. “Will you be here in the morning?”
He nodded. “As soon as I can. Wouldn’t miss it. What are you going to do tonight?”
“Get a motel room. Get some sleep. Check on my partners.”
Russell frowned. “Your partners?”
She crossed her arms. “I work with two partners, Jimmy and Sarah. The day you called, Sarah had gotten hurt while we were shooting a supercell that produced two funnel clouds. She’s in the hospital.”
“Wow. I’m sorry.”
Molly shrugged. “Lousy timing. But Jimmy convinced me I’d be of more use here. Get this out of the way. When Sarah’s well, we can get back to work right away.”
“Reasonable. But are you sure you’ll be safe to stay alone?”
Molly hesitated. “Probably for now. Bird’s mean and definitely capable of coming after me physically. But my guess is they’ll try to get around me another way first. Twenty years ago, it got ugly only after they ran out of options.”
“That’s when Mickey got hurt.”
“You knew?”
“Liz told me. Just remember that I have a condo with a guest room, if you need it.” He gestured at the Explorer, curiosity on his face. “Is that really all you own?”
“Pretty much. I own the equipment for chasing. Why?”
“When Liz told me you were a storm chaser, I had this image of you traveling around with all this high tech gizmo gear and a slick team of experts to help you, talking in a jargon no one else could understand.”
She grinned. “If you won’t believe everything you saw in Twister, I won’t think all Southern lawyers are Matlock.”
He laughed. “Deal.”

"The Girl behind the Red Rope" by Ted Dekker and Rachelle Dekker ... and a GIVEAWAY!

The publisher has agreed to give away two print copies of this book (US ONLY). You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends September 20, 2019. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you.)

Q&A with Ted and Rachelle...

Q:  Ted, what advice did you have for Rachelle as she began writing?
A:   They say getting published is like crossing a stormy sea (the writing process) with the hopes that, once on a distant shore, you might get struck by lightning (being published). Having taken that journey myself, I feared for my daughter's emotional well-being in attempting such an arduous crossing. The journey brings you to a breaking point, over and over. And even then, there is more hardship with each novel you write.

Ten years ago, Rachelle stood on the stage with me and announced her intention to become a novelist. I was surprised by the tears that rushed into my eyes, right there in front of a thousand people. I begged her to reconsider — surely inviting such struggle wasn't wise! Then she was crying, insisting she had to take the journey, and I held her for a moment as we both embraced that journey in the face of fear. It was a tender and life-altering experience for both of us. Little did we know that ten years later we would be co-authoring a book that exposes the sea of fears masquerading as wisdom that we have been taught will keep us safe.

Q:  Rachelle, you have now written five novels. Why did you decide to pursue writing in spite of your dad's advice?
A:  I learned early that I, like my father, discovered truth about the world and myself best through writing. I wrote because I had to. And I'm a rebel of sorts, so if you tell me I can't or shouldn't do something, it makes you want to do it that much more. We all need to find our own way across the sea of fears that makes up our world, regardless of the encouragement or discouragement that comes our way. In hindsight, he was right — the storms of fear in life are often debilitating. But facing and overcoming them, in whatever course we choose, is the great privilege we all have in this life.

Q:  Did you ever worry about what collaboration might do to your father-daughter relationship? How did you handle disagreements on direction if and when they came up?
A:  No. If anything, collaborating taught us to see ourselves as partners on a journey beyond the expectation of authority that historically exists in a father-daughter relationship. We knew from the beginning that collaborating was as much about us letting go of our individual ideas and preferences as it was writing a story. As it turns out, we work very well together in that awareness.

Q:  What surprised the two of you about working together?
A:  How easy it was, really. Once you let go of ownership in any idea and the desire to project our ideas on each other, the path flowed with ease and grace. Who says one idea is better than another, anyway? We all have ideas of how things should be, and as we release the "shoulds," a new creative energy arises. The whole novel is actually about letting go of all the "shoulds" that keep us in fear. Fear kills creativity.

Q:  What compelled you to write The Girl behind the Red Rope?
A:  I (Rachelle) had been working with the story idea for some time before we decided to make this novel a collaborative work. I was initially intrigued by the question "What if our fears were like monsters that followed us?" Because aren't they really? Once we decided to work together, we expanded the idea further and fleshed it out to what it is now: a story of love over fear, light over darkness, and freedom over all we have been taught will keep us safe and secure.

If we think of fear, darkness, and the safety offered by all the "shoulds" in life as what we call evil, we quickly see how pervasive it is in this world, including in religion itself. We don't easily see all those monsters that hold us captive in this life, and once we do, we are rather shocked. It's no wonder fear rules this plane of existence — we continue to feed it under the guise of wisdom and godliness. But in love there is no fear. So how does one awaken out of the darkness of fear into the light of love? That's the conundrum this story engages.

Q:  Who is the girl behind the red rope?
A:  When you read the novel, we think you'll see the main character as someone you might be familiar with because she is all of us. Grace lives in the safest place on earth. None of the devastation of the world can reach her. There's a rule for everything, and all the temptations that call to us are absent. This place is the purest place on earth as long as she stays behind the red rope. So what could possibly go wrong?

As it turns out, everything. What was once seen as the desire for purity is quickly seen as fear of not being pure. Indeed, fear is the god we so often bow down to. We have been deceived into thinking it will keep us safe. But letting go of that lie is counterintuitive to all we have been taught about ourselves and the world we live in.

In the end, the girl behind the red rope is the whole world.

Q:  Are any of the characters' issues personal or ones you have struggled with in your own lives?
A:  All of the characters' issues are personal to both of us at different times in our lives, including those we still contend with. Their specific issues are all just various aspects of the entire system of fear and control — the wisdom of the world that tucks us in at night and makes us believe we are safe while enslaving us still. We all have red ropes that hold us captive, and if we can see the system of fear and control for what it is, we would be shocked. Here is a story that opens our eyes to some of those fears and the light of love and freedom beyond them.

Q:  How can readers connect with you?
A:  (Ted) Readers can connect with me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/teddekker/.
(Rachelle) The best place to connect is through my website, www.rachelledekker.com.

Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. I'm sure my readers will enjoy it learning the story behind the story.

My review...

I’ve read numerous books by Ted Dekker, and I’ve read some from Rachelle, as well, so I was excited to read this one they co-wrote. As expected, it was a thought-provoking read.

What lengths will a person go to in order to feel safe when they’ve been raised to be afraid of everything? That’s what Grace must decide. She’s lived her entire life in Haven Valley, a community that’s separated itself from the rest of the world and lives under strict rules to keep them safe from the Fury. They are taught never to go beyond the red rope surrounding their community. But, things change when Grace’s brother goes beyond that perimeter and a child from the other side shows up in Haven Valley, causing her to have doubts about all she’s known to be true. Is he the demon they’ve been taught to fear? Or does he have a higher purpose? Does the Fury truly exist?

The authors take the reader behind that red rope perimeter and cause them to explore, and even question, good vs. evil in the world. The story may cause the reader to take a closer look at their own beliefs and view things through new eyes to determine if they have red ropes in their own lives. Themes of fear and freedom are woven throughout, creating a powerful message, as well as a suspenseful ride along the way.

Some of my favorite quotes:
  • “…there is no fear in love, just like there’s no darkness in light.”
  • “Fear has blinded all of humanity.”

Blurb...

BENEATH A CAMPERDOWN ELM, Book 3, Trails of Reba Cahill Series

What mystery lurks under an old Scottish elm?

Reba’s scary stalker is locked up in jail.
She finally snatches a rancher fiancé.
Her runaway mother returns home.
Reba has everything she ever wanted.
But Grandma Pearl has disappeared!
Is Reba about to lose it all?
Three generations of women
travel separate journeys of the heart.

 Excerpt...

Don Runcie might as well have beaten Reba with a tire iron and left her for dead. The effect wrenched the same. Her joy wadded up in a bloody rag at her feet.
“Reba Mae,” Jace began and stopped.
A gust of wind dashed over them, whipping Reba’s hair and spinning ground debris like devil dust. She swiveled her shoulder into it as a loud crack and crash thundered directly overhead and zigzags of light splayed.
     Jace muttered something.
Reba turned the mare, tried to ignore him, and shut out the whole world.
Jace shouted through the storm. “I think we just got offered a job.”
“On our own ranch.” Reba spit the words out. Growing rage tromped up her spine like steel. “I should have asked him where Grandma Pearl is. He seems to know much more than anyone what’s going on around here.”
She tried to settle the mare as lightning snapped again over the canyon. She clutched the horse’s mane as hard, muddy raindrops pelted her face. The storm flare outside matched her inward churn.
“Shouldn’t we head home?” Jace hollered into the downpour.
     Home?
     Where was home?

It’s August 1991. Reba Mae Cahill brims with joy. Her life’s perfect. She’s finally bringing her prodigal mother, Hanna Jo, home to Road’s End from a Reno mental institute. With them is Jace McKane, her fiancé, who promises to help fight the unjust lawsuit that threatens the family ranch. He wants a new start, away from his unscrupulous father and all his drama.
Just as Reba’s getting Jace trained to become her rancher husband, she discovers Grandma Pearl betrayed her once again, in a way that also harms her mother. Reba believes she’s lost everything—her career, her identity, her lifelong pursuit, and her main reason for marrying Jace.
When Jace returns to California to bail out his father and pursue Quigley, a psychotic killer, who escaped from prison, she wonders if he’ll ever return to Road’s End?
Then Hanna Jo claims she sees alleged wild horses in the mountain valleys as she learns her son and ex-husband’s fishing boat sank in an Alaskan sea. Can Reba keep her from flipping out for good?
As Grandma Pearl struggles with guilt, health issues, and finding purpose for the rest of her life, will the new church building project provide an answer?
Meanwhile, twenty-one-year-old Scottish twin tourists, Archie and Wynda MacKenzie, mesmerize the town with their trick biking skills and charming accents. Reba’s not sure they’re all they claim to be. And someone harasses Reba with letters and phone calls. What are they really after?
Will any of the answers be found beneath the Camperdown Elm?

A contemporary western romance with a zing of mystery.

My review...

This is the third book in “A Trails of Reba Cahill” series, and it’s the first book I’ve read by this author. While the book could be read as a standalone, I think it could benefit the reader to start from the beginning of the series to gain a greater appreciation for characters and their charming small town.

Scenes are nicely detailed and grab the reader’s attention, and the character development is strong. While the characters are likeable, there are a number of them, making it hard to follow and keep track of everyone at times. It’s easier to focus on the lead characters. Grandma Pearl is probably my favorite character. Some of the antics in the story are hilarious, and God’s grace is evident and woven throughout.

MY REVIEW

I’ve never read a book about codebreakers, so I was excited to have the opportunity to read this book and be on the launch team.

White’s latest takes the reader into the secret world of World War I codebreakers. Characters, including the secondary ones, are well developed and integrated. Those who enjoy math may connect with the story in ways that the average reader might not. However, the non-mathematical readers will likely enjoy the espionage angle and the challenge to crack the code.

The author blends fiction with historical facts, as this book was obviously well researched. The cover is lovely, and it’s a good fit for the story.  I had hoped for a bit more mystery vs. romance, but this was still an enjoyable story overall. This is the first book in the Codebreaker series, and I look forward to reading the next installment.

Q&A WITH ROSEANNA

  1. What was your inspiration for The Number of Love?

Learning about England’s intelligence division during WW1 was pretty much all the inspiration I needed. I was so fascinated by Room 40 (the predecessor to Bletchley Park) and all that went on there! So I knew I wanted to have a female codebreaker (in fact there were many women who worked in Room 40, but they were all secretaries—Margot is purely fiction), and I also knew that if I was going to write a love story for her, it needed to be with someone who was her opposite—and who better than a field agent?

  2. Good point! Which character in the book do you most identify with and why?

These characters really stretched me! I’m not particularly like any of them, LOL. But Drake has this “super power” of asking questions that dig down to the heart of things, and that I took directly from my husband, who is never content to let anything just scratch the surface, even when I really wish he would, LOL. He’s made me look so much deeper at things over the years, and that’s what I wanted Drake to do for the people in his life too.

  3. What makes this book different from your others?

A mathematician as a heroine. Need I say more? I never thought I’d have to borrow my daughter’s algebra book to write a novel!

  4. Definitely not your typical research book! Speaking of research, how much research went into this story?

A lot. For the first time in my life, this research had me making charts in Excel with dates, what happened, what page of what book I could find it on, and how I might use it. Excel sheets. Me. This was weird, man.

  5. Ha! I understand. I don't use Excel unless I have to. What part would you have played in the Great War?

I’m a homebody, so I probably would have been one of the women busy knitting, growing food, and educating the kids. Assuming I was my age and had kids. If not, maybe I would have volunteered in one of the canteens in Europe…or maybe, like another of my characters, I would have been recruited to write some pro-war themes into my stories! LOL

  6. Sounds perfect! What do you hope readers takeaway from the story?

That our God will speak to us in whatever way we need—and if He goes silent, if our ears are deaf to Him for a while, He’s still right there, waiting. Sometimes we don’t understand the things that happen in life. But instead of asking, “Why did it happen?” we need to ask the better question: “How will He use it?”

  7. That's definitely a great way to look at things. What's your favorite time in history to read and/or write?

I honestly just love history in general. I’ve been really enjoying learning about Edwardian and Great War England, but other eras are equally interesting to me!

  8. What can you tell me about your current work in progress?

I’m just getting started on writing the third book in the Codebreakers series, tentatively titled A Picture of Loyalty, though that could change. This one has a photographer whose work is used to fool the enemy, and a Russian codebreaker who has to flee his country for his life during the Bolshevik Revolution and who ends up coming to England for sanctuary and to offer his services to Room 40. The hero’s journey is inspired by a true person from history, though I’ll be fictionalizing a lot too.

  9. Oh, that sounds interesting! What advice do you have for beginning writers?

Respect your dream. If you want to do this, work hard at it. Don’t look for short cuts or easy answers or quick solutions. Just as an engineer or a minister study for years, we as writers have to do the same. Because our stories—and our eventual readers—deserve the best.

  10. Great advice! What's your go-to writing-related book?

Er…I hate to admit this, but I honestly don’t read craft books, LOL. I’m aware of what most of them share, and my best friend/crit partner is kind enough to forward things she thinks I’ll find useful or interesting as she reads them, but... Reading about the craft actually makes me freeze up in my writing. I’m constantly going, “Do I do that? I have no idea. What if I don’t? How can I? Man, am I doing everything wrong??” and that wasn’t productive for me. So. I just write, and I learn the rules, and I’ve learned to obey the voice of instinct that usually knows when something’s wrong.

  11. Your system is definitely working for you. Now for a few fun questions. What's something about you that would surprise your readers?

Though my grandparents own a produce farm, I hate vegetables, LOL. I’ve learned to like a few over the years, but most of them…nope.

  12. I understand. I'm not a huge fan of vegetables either. What are some of the books in your TBR pile?

As of writing this, I’m about to start A Secret to Die For by Lisa Harris. But then I mean to pick up something by Kristi Ann Hunter. And I have Walking on Water by Madeleine L’Engle sitting here too—about art and faith.

  13. Who are three authors who've inspired you?

    L. M. Montgomery. C. S. Lewis. Francine Rivers.

  14. Great choices! If you could have dinner with anyone, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Oh, that’s a hard one! Let’s go with Jane Austen. Her books are so full of wit, I have to think her dinner conversation would be too!

  15. I bet it would be an interesting conversation! Finally, what's one book you wish you'd written and why?

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. I listened to it on audio recently and was left with the thought of “Flawless.” I’m just amazed at how great it is! Definitely deserving of all the attention it’s received.
It was the first audio book I listened to, and I agree with you. It's a fabulous book, and it definitely deserves all the attention. Thanks for taking time to answer a few questions. I'm sure my readers will enjoy getting to know more about your and your books.

My review...

This is the sequel to The Lost Castle. There are three storylines woven together: 1916 (with Issy), 1799 (with Eoin), and present day (with Ellie and Laine). Each one has a strong heroine who faces adversity. While I liked reading some of the historical info on Ireland, there seemed to be a bit too much going on at times. It took a bit for it to all come together for me. Overall, I found it easiest to connect with the present-day story.

Cambron’s books are always meticulously researched, and this one is no exception. She has a gift for transporting the reader to a different time and place in history. I didn’t know much about Irish history prior to reading this, so I learned a lot along the way. The faith element isn’t as strong as I’d expected, but it is there. Be sure to check out the author’s note, as it’s quite interesting. The beautiful prose and cover make this a nice addition to the series.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of the book, but I wasn’t required to leave a positive review.

"Fugitive Spy" by Jordyn Redwood ... and a GIVEAWAY!

Jordyn Redwood has graciously offered to give away a hard copy of this new release. You can enter by using the Rafflecopter link at the end of the post. (Giveaway ends March 9, 2018. If you are the randomly chosen winner, I'll contact you and pass on your information.)

The story behind the story...

Fugitive Spy was inspired by the nonficiton book Biohazard by ken Alibek. Ken was a high-ranking Russian scientist who headed up their illegal biological weapons program. To say the Russians were "tinkering' with virulent pathogens would be an understatement. They were flat out creating, manufacturing, and stockpiling biological weapons of mass destruction. In the book, he outlines how there was a desire to combine two deadly pathogens into one, and that fueled Fugitive Spy's story line. Much of the things people might find far fetched in the story are actually based on history.

My review...

Dr. Ashley Drager is shocked to see that Casper English, a patient in the ER, has her photo and a tattoo that matches her father’s. Unfortunately, Casper has amnesia and is of little assistance. Ashley senses that the best chance she has of learning what happened to her missing father is to help Casper regain his memories, and she’s determined to do whatever it takes to make that happen. They embark on a journey that will place them in danger at every turn, and Ashley can barely comprehend the information that’s uncovered. Will the clues her father left behind lead them to the answers she’s longing for, as well as to her father, or will it lead them to unimaginable end?

Action and suspense start early on, and they don’t stop until the last page. The pace stays active throughout. This book doesn’t have quite as much of a medical aspect as some of Redwood’s other books. Perhaps the scariest part of the story is that it’s based on factual accounts. As usual, the author’s story is well-researched, but it’s not written at a level that’s too technical for the average reader, who will be flipping pages trying to guess the outcome while following the twists and turns of Redwood’s latest suspense.

Takeover Thursday with C.D. Gill ... and a GIVEAWAY!

The story behind the story...

On Wings of an Avalanche came to life in 2013 after listening to my British husband and in-laws talk about their adventures in Africa. Let me brag on them for a moment and mention that they were instrumental in bringing electricity to the northwest region of Zambia. That amazing transformation is a whole different blog post and lots of lives changed. Some of their African experiences made it into my novel, because sometimes real life is stranger than fiction.

In 2015, I had the life-changing privilege of going to NW Zambia in the bush and experiencing life out there for three weeks. We met locals, saw the stark differences between city Zambians and bush Zambians, and visited the hospital where my father-in-law performed surgeries as a missionary doctor.

I used my experiences in Zambia to lay the foundation for the story set in Mali. Nafy’s glitter shoes came from a boy that my father-in-law operated on that wore glittery ballet flats around the hospital after his surgery. I never heard his entire story, but the shoes were what his family had so that is what he wore. For many kids, that is the case. The shoes and clothes they wear are whatever is available. They don’t see themselves as poor. In fact, they are far freer than we are while we sit in our climatized houses surrounded by our conveniences and stuff.

There’s so much I could tell you about Africa. Things that I had SO wrong in my head, a lot of positives and negatives. The kids out there are free-range kids, but they do their part to help everyone in the home survive. Seven-year-olds would have infants strapped on their backs so Mom could get a break. They would work in the fields but still have time to play. However, the water comes from the rivers and streams—not clean. There is a really high teenage pregnancy rate. And they often don’t do anything to change what they don’t like. Part of it is their way of life, and part of it was bred by colonization.

In the story, Madison gets pulled over by a policeman for speeding. The catch is that the policeman is on foot. I had a reader tell me that this was not a believable part of the story, and I had to smile for two reasons. One was because it actually happened to my husband. The policeman was going to take him to jail as a teenager, but they were able to pay a fine and drive away. The second is that the roads are so filled with huge holes that it only takes a policeman on foot to stop you, because you can’t drive faster without damaging your vehicle. For you off-roading lovers, those are your dream roads for every day.

I do want to mention that the lessons Chip and Madison learned are lessons close to my heart. Forgiveness. Trust. Releasing the past. They’re all vital to your present. And one of the main things I want readers to take away from the story is that other cultures aren’t necessarily wrong. They’re just different, and that’s okay. Westerners seem to have a my-way-or-the-highway mindset about the world. But that picture is monochromatic and dull. When we learn about the rest of the world, we have to keep in mind the beauty and color they bring to their world and ours by living and thinking differently than we do.

I’m looking forward to interacting with you all about what you like and what you think about On Wings of an Avalanche.

Back cover blurb...

A struggling charity hospital, visa troubles, and an arrest at gunpoint leave Dr. Madison Cote at the mercy of the corrupt Malian police. Rescue comes at a price when a warlord demands that she traffic drugs  in exchange for her freedom and his protection. When the French embassy enlists her to relay intelligence on the warlord, Dr. Cote's trapped as a civilian double agent, facing an immediate death sentence if she's caught.

Royal Air Force recruit Chip Chapman needs to prove to himself that he can be more than his abusive father. A week before basic training, an avalanche replaces his dreams of heroism with raw survivalism. Taken captive for his piloting skills, Chip plans to escape until he uncovers war crimes no human could ignore.

Both pressed into servitude, Dr. Cote and Chip forge a desperate alliance. But with lives in the balance, their allegiances and honor will be the least of the sacrifices required to topple a warlord.
