Happy New Year! I don't know about you, but at the end of each December, I still write out a few resolutions I hope to achieve in the upcoming year. I also look over the ones I wrote the prior year to see what progress, if any, I made on them. Many years, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that I made some headway on what I'd hoped to achieve. Of course, there are always things I didn't "complete." Some resolutions come along into the new year, and some don't. I used to get down on myself for not being able to check off all I'd resolved to do in the past year. About eight years ago, I revamped how I did things after reading about "one word." While I still write a few resolutions, I've changed the focus of them, and I've added in the concept of "one word" to focus on for the new year. This has helped me keep a more positive outlook on things.

Many people view a new year as the perfect time to revive big dreams and make new plans. It's a clean slate. A fresh start. Everything seems bright.

For Christ-followers, there's no need to wait for a new year to be excited about the future. God has a plan for each of us. It's grander than we could ever envision. And, it's not dependent on whether or not we meet yearly resolutions. You can rest in the fact that today's verse is as true as it ever has been:

There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off.

Have a blessed New Year!

Thankful Thursday: His Encouragement #4

Welcome to Thankful Thursday: His Encouragement. I am blessed to be part of a group of bloggers who'll be sharing a bit of encouragement through Scripture verses. I hope this post blesses you as you finish the week and that you find peace, strength, and comfort in the Lord.

This verse pretty much says it all, doesn't it? And it's perfect for the upcoming holiday season. God gave us the best gift possible: His Son, Jesus ... the reason for the season.

It states in Luke 2:11, "For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord." With Christmas next week, it's a good time to reflect on the meaning behind the day: a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. He died for our sins. He loved us that much!

The true meaning of Christmas often gets lost in the shuffle of holiday busyness, with all the shopping, parties, and plans. Stress tends to beat out the joy of the season for many people.

While I love the Christmas lights and decorations, one of my favorite parts of Christmas is the Christmas Eve service at church. Specifically, I love the candlelight service during "Silent Night," where the sanctuary is dark aside from the tiny candle glowing in each person's hands ... a beautiful reminder that Jesus is the light of the world.

This year, take a few moments to pause and appreciate what Christmas is really about. Through His birth, He's given us an eternal gift, one much larger than will fit under any Christmas tree.

Dear readers, I pray that you have a blessed Christmas.

Life is stressful. Is it really possible to have perfect peace ... always, and not just when things are going smoothly? Yes, it is! But, to obtain it, we have to switch our focus from the things here on earth that increase our anxiety daily to the One who is peace.

God never promised us a life without any problems, but He did promise to never leave us alone. He wants us to turn to Him. I know it's not always easy to do. I've worked a lot over the past few years to shift those worries to prayer and then let them go. I still fail at doing that far more than I'd like to admit. But, when I do it, I'm reminded of why it needs to be my go-to option. When I turn to God first, I feel a sense of peace ... one that only He can provide. Those little annoyances and stressors are temporary and ever-changing, but the Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8). He is the Rock we can stand on. His peace passes all understanding, and I want that--in fact, I need that--in my life.
