today. I am so excited to share the development of Secret Past, my debut novel with Love Inspired Suspense. The story
is currently a stand alone, but I’ll admit, I love Katie and Daniel, so they
might just pop up somewhere else someday! Stay tuned!
The book focuses on Katie Tribani’s façade
of a life. As the story opens, Katie is dealing with the loss of her mother. She
doesn’t get time to grieve before she’s thrust into the protection of US
Marshal Daniel Knight. He warns her that the father and brother she’s never
known have discovered her location and they’re coming for her.
Every reality in Katie’s life tumbles down
as Daniel whisks her away to safety. Katie has no one left to verify Daniel’s
story, and this stranger is her only hope of uncovering the truth before her
family kills her.
Katie’s in for a series of surprises and must
decipher who is telling the truth.
The US Marshal’s Witness Protection
Program is quite fascinating and has an interesting history. I wanted to write
a story that showed how instrumental the US Marshals are in the protection of
those witnesses. Although I’d read several books with characters in that
predicament, I needed more facts. That sent me on a research journey which can
be dangerous, because for me, I start out Googling one topic, and before you
know it, I’m all over the place. Occasionally, I end up on Pinterest and DIY
projects which have absolutely nothing to do with my research, but it’s fun.
Fortunately, that wasn’t the case in this particular story. I wanted facts, and
what better way to find those than to start with the program itself?
I found great information right on the US
Marshals website including the fact that the program has been around since the
early 1970s. I also searched pictures, movies, and books, and somewhere along the
line, I came upon a black and white picture of a child with his mom in a story
about the program. That’s when I started to play “what if.”
What if my heroine was placed in the
program as a child and grew up always under protection? If that was normal, if
her family didn’t want her to know the truth … as an adult, how would that effect
a person? When is a good time for a parent to tell their child the truth? And
that posed my target question: What if you’d been raised in witness protection
and never known it?
From there, Katie developed into a strong,
intelligent, green-eyed beauty who’s determined to find the truth about
herself.
The funny thing is, I had been watching a
lot of the show, Quantico at the time I was writing Secret Past, and Katie and
Daniel both took on the physical attributes from two of Quantico’s characters.
Research doesn’t happen just at the
beginning of the book. It occurs all the way through and sometimes long before
the story is ever conceived. Such is the case with this novel. Nearly two years
before the conception of Secret Past, I’d gone hiking with a
friend in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and she recommended we do the Manitou
Incline. I can honestly say that was one of the toughest, most rewarding
adventures of my life. Strangely, halfway up, an idea for a shootout scene came
to mind, and it easily worked its way into Katie and Daniel’s experience.
I also work to ensure my scenes are
accurate, so my law-enforcement husband has endured some creative research, too,
including me tying him to a chair to see if he could escape.
That’s the messy history of Secret
Past. For those who haven’t read it, I hope you’ll get a copy and enjoy

Leslie, for having me today! I’m thrilled to be here and to be able to giveaway
a signed paperback copy of Dangerous
Obsession! This is the last book in my Security Specialists series, though
it can be read as a standalone, and readers will be seeing some cameos from this
special team of protectors in upcoming Love Inspired Suspense novels.
Dangerous Obsession is Wilder Flynn’s story. He’s the team leader
who put this band of soldiers together after his sister died. You meet Wilder
in Final Verdict (the book that this
series hinges on) and gather bits and pieces in the subsequent books, but his
full story is revealed here. The truth is, he just showed up on the pages with
my hero in Final Verdict and had a
certain charm about him as well as a secret…though I wasn’t sure what it was
back then. Wilder isn’t much of a talker which is why it was so much fun to put
him with a heroine whose sole job is to get people to speak. Enter Cosette
LaCroix, a feisty Cajun woman who is the resident psychologist on the team.
By the time I got around to
writing his story, I picked up the pieces he tossed out in the other books and
worked on getting him to reveal to me the rest of his story. When it finally
tumbled out, I was surprised to learn about some of his quirks, his hidden
talents, and the big secret. As far as dealing with Cosette, I enlisted my
sister, Celeste. She’s a therapist and has a lot of experience dealing with
sociopathic behavior as well as traumatized individuals. I knew I wanted a
stalker since it would force Wilder to open up and relive some of his painful
past, and I knew I needed it to relate to someone he cared about … Cosette! But I
like to give readers a fun twist, so I got on the phone one afternoon with my
sister. I took a notebook outside by the pool and planted myself on a lounge
chair, and we began to talk through some scenarios that would be believable and
still fit the Love Inspired Suspense line—which is the heroine and hero must be
in constant danger. So why would a stalker want to immediately threaten their
object of affection? After discussing some ideas and what would be a natural
progression, we had a solid story!
It was so much fun to plot with
my sister, and it gave me a new appreciation for her job. Truly, it’s a gift to
be able to see the kinds of things she does in real life and not curl up in a
ball and check out. I only write about some of the darkness. Also, I should
note, she never broke any confidentiality oaths while we brainstormed.

Love Inspired Blog Tour
Feel comforted and at peace when you read these uplifting romances of faith, forgiveness and hope from Love Inspired. There are twelve new books each month: six from Love Inspired for those who love contemporary romance and six from Love Inspired Suspense for those who like some danger with their romance stories.
My review of Primary Suspect by Laura Scott:
Widowed ER nurse Dana Petrie meets Mitch Callahan, a
fire investigator, after he’s attacked at t a crime scene. He believes someone
is setting him up for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, but Dana believes in his
innocence. Unfortunately, that belief has now placed her in danger, too. Is it
possible that her former husband’s family could be connected to a string of
warehouse fires? And who hates Mitch enough to set him up for murder?
Scott’s latest is the fifth installment of her
“Callahan Confidential” series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. The
pace is active throughout, and the action stays steady, so it holds the
reader’s attention. There is a nice mix of mystery/romance, so the romance
doesn’t dominate the story. A few things tie up a bit too quickly, but,
overall, this is a nice addition to the series. The cover is a great fit, as
well.

My review of The Wedding Quilt Bride by Marta Perry:
After the death of her husband James, Rebecca Mast
returns home to her Amish community with her six-year-old son Elijah, “Lige,”
in tow. It doesn’t take long for her childhood friend Daniel King to realize
that she’s not the same person she was a few years ago. It’s apparent that
something happened to while she was gone, but he’s not quite sure what. Lige is
withdrawn, especially around strangers. He wants to help her get settled, along
with helping her set up her quilt shop, but Rebecca is independent and wants to
do it on her own. Can she come to realize that it’s okay to accept help and
trust another man?
It’s easy to connect with the characters in this book
where love, faith, healing, and redemption are key themes. It’s the second book
in the “Brides of Lost Creek” series, but it can easily be read as a
standalone. Perry has a way of adding realism to her stories. Some parts are a
bit predictable, but this is still a quick, enjoyable read with a satisfying
ending.

The story behind the story...
Fugitive Spy was inspired by the nonficiton book Biohazard by ken Alibek. Ken was a high-ranking Russian scientist who headed up their illegal biological weapons program. To say the Russians were "tinkering' with virulent pathogens would be an understatement. They were flat out creating, manufacturing, and stockpiling biological weapons of mass destruction. In the book, he outlines how there was a desire to combine two deadly pathogens into one, and that fueled Fugitive Spy's story line. Much of the things people might find far fetched in the story are actually based on history.
My review...
Dr. Ashley Drager is shocked to see that Casper
English, a patient in the ER, has her photo and a tattoo that matches her
father’s. Unfortunately, Casper has amnesia and is of little assistance. Ashley
senses that the best chance she has of learning what happened to her missing
father is to help Casper regain his memories, and she’s determined to do
whatever it takes to make that happen. They embark on a journey that will place
them in danger at every turn, and Ashley can barely comprehend the information
that’s uncovered. Will the clues her father left behind lead them to the
answers she’s longing for, as well as to her father, or will it lead them to
unimaginable end?
Action and suspense start early on, and they don’t
stop until the last page. The pace stays active throughout. This book doesn’t
have quite as much of a medical aspect as some of Redwood’s other books.
Perhaps the scariest part of the story is that it’s based on factual accounts.
As usual, the author’s story is well-researched, but it’s not written at a
level that’s too technical for the average reader, who will be flipping
pages trying to guess the outcome while following the twists and turns of Redwood’s latest suspense.

"Plain Retribution" by Dana R. Lynn
Q & A with Dana...
Q: What would you be doing if you were not an author?
A: I work as a teacher for the Deaf and hard of hearing.
Q: How did you get started writing?
A: I have always enjoyed writing. I
wrote stories and poems even as kid. I didn't try to write for publication,
however, until 2013. Harlequin had a contest called "So You Think You Can
Write." I finished that contest with my first full manuscript. I was
hooked.
Q: What do you see as the hardest part
of being a writer?
A: Balance is the biggest challenge. I
have a family, a full-time job, and am active in my church. Making sure I meet
all my commitments requires some prioritizing.
Q: What advice do you have for new
authors?
A: Don't give up. Even with rejections
and revisions, there are often comments. Keep working and improving your story.
And when you finish one, start on another.
Q: What is your favorite
writing-related book?
A: I have two that I love. Super Story
Structure by James Scott Bell and The Story Equation by Susan May Warren.
Q: What can you
tell me about your next project?
A: I am hoping
to continue to add a few more books to my Amish Country Justice series. Also, I
have hopes of writing some contemporary romance. Inspirational, of course.

My review...
While she was on rumspringa,
Rebecca Miller was kidnapped, along with her friends, ten years ago. Now living
in the Englisch world, Rebecca finds
herself a target once again. Officer Miles Olsen is the only one of the force
who is able to communicate with her, as Rebecca is deaf. When the threats
increase and those close to Rebecca turn up missing, Miles questions his
ability to keep her safe. Is this related to the incident years ago, or is
someone else out to get her?
This is the second installment in the “Amish Country
Justice” series. I was happy to see Rebecca as the heroine, as I enjoyed her in
Plain Target. The fact that she is
deaf adds to the danger angle in this story. The action starts on the front
page. There is great chemistry between Rebecca and Miles, and the mystery keeps
you guessing throughout. Spiritual elements are woven in and are not preachy or
overwhelming. I look forward to reading the final book in this trilogy.

A Word from Jordyn...
The beginning of Fractured
Memory was actually inspired by a television murder mystery show (Dateline or 48 Hours) where police showed up at a woman’s door one morning and
told her a hit had been put on her life and she needed to leave with them right
then and there. Can you imagine? Putting your life in the hands of an utter
stranger? Of course, I had to come up with my own plot with some medical
thriller action thrown in.
Q & A with Jordyn...
Q: How did you start writing?
A: I've always had a love of writing. I started writing short stories when I was in elementary school. One of my very first stories was about a rabbit who had to go to the "hoppyital" because I couldn't spell "hospital." I guess I was always destined to be a nurse who writes medical thrillers.
Q: I love that! Hoppyital :) What are your thoughts on the publishing industry in general? In relation to self-publishing?
A: Hard question but an intriguing question. I'll boil it down to this. I think the most successful authors are consistently doing a lot of the same things. They both traditionally and indie publish. They write in different genres (fiction and non-fiction) and explore different niches within their own main genre (such as a thriller author doing romantic suspense and cozy mystery). They also write and publish novels of varying length — full-length, novella, and short story. James Patterson's recent release of a multitude of what he calls "BookShots" is a testament to this. Many successful authors are co-authoring books. These are my goals moving forward.
Q: You certainly make some good points! I have seen Patterson's "BookShots," but I haven't picked one up… yet :) What advice do you have for new authors?
A: The first draft is your own. Do little editing. Just get the words on the page.
Q: What is your favorite writing-related book?
A: Hard question but an intriguing question. I'll boil it down to this. I think the most successful authors are consistently doing a lot of the same things. They both traditionally and indie publish. They write in different genres (fiction and non-fiction) and explore different niches within their own main genre (such as a thriller author doing romantic suspense and cozy mystery). They also write and publish novels of varying length — full-length, novella, and short story. James Patterson's recent release of a multitude of what he calls "BookShots" is a testament to this. Many successful authors are co-authoring books. These are my goals moving forward.

The plot surrounds FBI CARD agent Arabella Wright, whose job is to find lost children. When her own daughter is kidnapped by a serial murderer, everything in her life unravels. Of course, who is behind these crimes and why has some medical thriller thrown in.

A: I'm a definite pen fanatic. Take one of my pens and your life could be in danger! If your dying wish is to have my favorite pen — I might eventually have to stop and think about if I will give it to you. Isn't that terrible? :)

"Blindsided" by Katy Lee
Excerpt...
Veronica Spencer’s fuchsia patent leather boots, useless in the New Hampshire soggy spring, stalled on the backlot pavement of her racetrack. The sound of mechanical whirring and the clang of metal tools came from behind the closed bay doors of a dark, unused garage at Spencer Speedway. This was her garage, she silently staked her claim. She had a plan for it, and it didn’t include a squatter.
The damp, cold, night wind matched her bitter mood and fluttered her signature rose pink silk scarf, also not an accessory for functionality—but in the case of her scarves, glamour wasn’t their purpose either. Mutilated scar tissue from a car fire at three years of age covered her neck and right arm. It was the arm she’d used to reach for her mother, who’d sat in the front passenger seat before the flames killed her. Roni’s burns reminded her of the memory daily. The scarves?
They helped her forget.
They also had a way of putting people at ease when they saw her coming. Gave them something pretty to look at instead.
Roni had no intentions of putting her intruder at ease.
She smiled the first smile since she left her uncle grumbling at his dining room table earlier that night.

"Plain Protector" by Alison Stone
A Word from Alison...
Thank you, Leslie, for inviting me to visit your blog. I
never imagined I’d be writing Amish fiction when I first started writing. I had
been targeting Harlequin’s Love Inspired Suspense line for a couple of years
and had come “this close” to selling two different books that were ultimately
turned down by the senior editor. Determined to sell to Harlequin, I attended a
panel at a conference where the editors discussed their wish list. I heard the
senior editor say she’d love to see more Amish suspense. Intrigued, I started
to run through ideas and had a plot formulating before I even hopped on the
plane home. Once home, I researched the Amish by reading textbooks and memoirs. I went to visit a local Amish community, and I started writing the book. Less
than a year later, I sold this story which
was published under the title, Plain
Pursuit. Since then, I’ve sold eight more books to Harlequin, six of which are
Amish.
I have a lot of fun writing Amish because I enjoy the
challenge. Not only do I have to come up with a plot appropriate for the Love
Inspired Suspense line, but I also have to create a realistic story set in an
Amish community. One way I have expanded
the number of stories set in the same community, a fictional town called Apple
Creek, is by creating a hero and heroine who are not Amish, but live and work
among the Amish. In Plain Protector,
Sarah moves to Apple Creek to escape her abusive ex-boyfriend. When it seems
that he has found her, she must rely on the deputy sheriff to protect her. The
perfect start of a romance, right? Well, perfect for romantic suspense.
My next Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense, Plain Cover-Up, is due out in August 2016. I have another due out sometime next year. I'm currently writing it!
Over the winter, I had the chance to write something completely different. Both my daughters dance competitively, and I had a story idea bouncing around in my head for years. I was thrilled to sell Pointe and Shoot, a dance mystery with romantic elements, to Waterfall Press, Amazon Publishing's Christian imprint. I like to call it my Dance Moms meets Blue Bloods story.
